Johnny Walker stuns Waldo Cortes-Acosta with wild third-round comeback at UFC Vegas 124
Johnny Walker stopped Waldo Cortes-Acosta by TKO at 2:27 of round three at UFC Vegas 124.

Johnny Walker refused to be denied at UFC Vegas 124. After the prelims covered earlier today, the heavyweight main event delivered the wildest finish of the night, as the Brazilian stopped Waldo Cortes-Acosta by technical knockout at 2:27 of the third round on Saturday, 7 November, inside the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. Walker, who took the fight on short notice, survived being dropped in the opening round and weathered two difficult rounds before turning the fight upside down with a head kick that set up the finish. It was his second straight knockout since moving up to heavyweight.
The bout was a late change. The original main event, a welterweight fight between Sean Brady and Gabriel Bonfim, fell through after Brady was injured, and Walker stepped in to face Cortes-Acosta instead. The Dominican, ranked sixth in the UFC heavyweight rankings, entered as the favourite and hoping to end a two-fight losing run.
A fast start, then trouble
Walker opened by attacking Cortes-Acosta's lead leg with kicks, chopping at his base while staying out of range of the heavy punches coming back at him. Cortes-Acosta, nicknamed "Salsa Boy", kept launching wild haymakers, and one of them found its target in the first round, putting Walker down against the fence. The Brazilian got straight back to his feet.
The second round followed a similar pattern. Cortes-Acosta landed several heavy right hands that wobbled Walker, controlled the mat late in the round and finished the frame on top of his opponent. Two of the three judges scored both opening rounds for Cortes-Acosta, and by the start of the third, Walker needed something dramatic.

The comeback
The answer arrived early in the third round. Walker hurt Cortes-Acosta with a question mark kick to the head, a strike that seemed to come out of nowhere, and followed it with a back fist to the face. The combination buckled the Dominican's knees. Walker then dropped him with a straight right hand to the jaw and pounced with follow-up punches until referee Jason Herzog stepped in. The official time was 2:27 of round three, and the arena erupted for one of the most chaotic comebacks of the year.
The finish was pure Johnny Walker: strange, sudden and violent. The question mark kick is not a strike most heavyweights throw, and the back fist that followed it looked improvised even as it landed cleanly. Yet the sequence was no accident. Walker had spent the first two rounds chopping at the leg and drawing Cortes-Acosta into exchanges, and when his opponent tired, the Brazilian found the opening he had been waiting for.
After the fight, Walker turned his attention to the critics who had questioned his durability. "Fuck everybody who said I had no chin," he said, in comments reported after the event. He had been dropped, hurt and outworked for two rounds, and he had still found a way to win by knockout. The fight also earned both men the Fight of the Night bonus, a $100,000 reward.
What it means for the heavyweight division
The result moves Walker to 24 wins, 10 losses and one no contest, and to 2-0 since moving up to heavyweight. His divisional debut came only five weeks earlier, when he knocked out Mick Parkin in the first round at UFC 332 on 3 October in Salt Lake City. Two knockouts in five weeks is a remarkable start in a new weight class. He plans to attend UFC 334 in New York next week with training partner Alexander Volkov, to watch the heavyweight title fight between Ciryl Gane and Josh Hokit for the vacant belt. The message was obvious: he wants to be part of that picture soon.
For Cortes-Acosta, the defeat is a painful one. He falls to 17 wins and 5 losses, and the loss extends his losing run to three fights, after decision defeats to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes. His last win came in January, when he stopped Derrick Lewis in the second round at UFC 324. Against Walker he did much of what he needed to do for two rounds, but heavyweight fights can turn on a single exchange, and this one turned on a kick that he never saw coming.

The rest of the main card
The co-main event also produced a clear winner. Tatiana Suarez dominated former title challenger Virna Jandiroba for three rounds in their women's strawweight fight, using her wrestling to control the Brazilian and take her down repeatedly. Suarez won by unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, and moved a step closer to a crack at Mackenzie Dern's strawweight title. Jandiroba fell to 23 wins and 5 losses.
Elsewhere on the main card, Elijah Smith knocked out veteran Davey Grant with punches at 1:00 of the first round. Lucas Fernando earned a unanimous decision over Billy Elekana, with all three judges scoring the light heavyweight fight 29-28, and Nina Milosevic stopped Priscila Cachoeira with punches and elbows at 3:40 of the second round. Mitch Raposo opened the main card with a unanimous decision win over Marcos Degli, also by 29-28 on all three cards.
UFC Vegas 124 will be remembered as the night Johnny Walker completed his heavyweight arrival. The card streamed live on Paramount+, and the main event gave the audience exactly what the sport promises at its best: a fighter written off after two rounds finding one moment of brilliance to change everything. Walker now has momentum and a top-ten ranking in his sights. Cortes-Acosta must regroup after a third straight defeat, knowing he was two rounds from a win that would have steadied his career.
