UFC books Vinicius Oliveira vs. Pat Sabatini for January 23 Fight Night
Vinicius Oliveira will face No. 7-ranked Pat Sabatini at a UFC Fight Night on January 23, 2027.

The booking
The UFC's 2027 schedule has its first featherweight fight. Vinicius Oliveira and Pat Sabatini will meet at a UFC Fight Night event on January 23, 2027, MMA Junkie reported on November 5, with two people with knowledge of the matchup confirming the booking. The promotion has yet to make an official announcement, and no other fights have been announced for the card.
The bout is the first confirmed contest on the January 23 card, listed as UFC Fight Night 297. No venue has been confirmed, although the Meta APEX in Las Vegas is the frontrunner to host the event, according to the report. Journalist Laerte Viana first reported the matchup, days before the confirmation followed.
The timing fits a busy start to the new year: the UFC returns in Dallas on January 16 and heads to Toronto for UFC 336 on January 30, with the January 23 card sitting between the two dates.
For both men, the booking is a step toward the top of a crowded division. Sabatini sits at No. 7 in the featherweight rankings, while Oliveira is trying to turn a successful move up in weight into a run at the ranked names above him.

Oliveira's road to 145 pounds
Oliveira, known as "LokDog," arrives at featherweight with momentum and a point to prove. The Brazilian is 24-4 in his career and 5-1 in the UFC, and his move up from bantamweight has so far looked like the right call.
He made his featherweight debut on June 20, 2026, against veteran Andre Fili at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. Fili hurt him with body kicks in the opening round, and Oliveira appeared to injure his foot throwing a kick of his own. But the Brazilian rallied in the second round, overwhelming Fili with body shots, elbows and combinations along the fence until the referee stepped in at 4:56 of round two. The comeback earned both men a $100,000 Fight of the Night bonus.
The win answered the only real setback of Oliveira's UFC career. He had won his first four fights in the promotion before meeting Mario Bautista in his first UFC main event in February 2026, where Bautista submitted him with a rear-naked choke at 4:46 of the second round. The loss ended a six-fight winning streak, and the move up to 145 pounds has so far looked like the right answer.
Sabatini's quiet climb to No. 7
Sabatini has taken the opposite route to the same place. The Philadelphia native has built his ranking quietly, winning four straight fights without much noise, and now finds himself one win away from the division's elite.
His run began with a first-round submission of Jonathan Pearce in October 2024, finished with a rear-naked choke at 4:06 of the opening round. He followed that with a win over Joanderson Brito, then outworked Chepe Mariscal at UFC 322 in November 2025, handing Mariscal his first loss in the promotion with a unanimous decision scored 30-27 on all three cards.
The fourth win came on May 9, 2026, at UFC 328 in Newark, where Sabatini beat William Gomis by unanimous decision at the Prudential Center. Gomis had entered that fight at 5-1 in the UFC, and Sabatini's grappling-heavy game plan neutralised the Frenchman's range and kicking. The victory lifted Sabatini to 22-5 overall and 9-2 in the UFC, and to No. 7 in the featherweight rankings.
Sabatini, a former two-time Cage Fury Fighting Championships titleholder, has said repeatedly that he believes he is the best grappler in the featherweight division. The Oliveira fight is the promotion's answer to his calls for ranked opposition.

The matchup
On paper, the fight is a clear clash of styles. Oliveira is a pressure striker who walks opponents down, attacks the body and the legs, and thrives in exchanges along the fence. His win over Fili showed both his durability and his finishing instinct: hurt early, he stayed composed, found his range and finished the fight with a sustained attack.
Sabatini is a grappler first. His wins over Pearce, Brito, Mariscal and Gomis were built on control, takedowns and top pressure rather than knockouts, and his submission of Pearce remains the most emphatic finish of his recent run. Against Oliveira, his task will be to close the distance without walking into the Brazilian's combinations, get the fight to the floor and keep it there.
The key question is whether Oliveira can keep the fight standing long enough to do damage. If Sabatini can impose his wrestling early, Oliveira will have to defend takedowns for three rounds. If Oliveira can stuff the early attempts and make Sabatini pay on the feet, the momentum could swing quickly.
The rankings give the bout real stakes. Sabatini is defending a top-seven spot against an unranked opponent with obvious upside, while Oliveira has the chance to jump straight into the rankings with a win over a top-ten name. Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski sits above a division packed with contenders, and the winner of this fight will have a genuine claim to a bigger name next.
What comes next
Nothing about the January 23 card is official yet beyond the booking itself. The venue remains to be announced and no other fights have been confirmed. What is confirmed is the date, the matchup and the direction of travel for both men.
For Oliveira, January is a chance to prove the Fili win was the start of something rather than a one-off. For Sabatini, it is the ranked fight he has been asking for, against an opponent who will test his grappling in a way his recent wins have not.
