Tye Ruotolo Submits Christian Lee in 128 Seconds to Become ONE's First Two-Sport Champion
Tye Ruotolo submitted Christian Lee in 2:08 of round one to win the ONE lightweight MMA title and become the promotion's first two-sport world champion.

Two minutes and eight seconds. That was all Tye Ruotolo needed to end Christian Lee's second reign as ONE Championship lightweight champion, take the belt for himself, and do something no athlete in the promotion's history had ever done. At The Inner Circle 37 in Bangkok on Friday, 6 November, the 23-year-old grappling star submitted Lee with a rear-naked choke at 2:08 of the opening round at Lumpinee Stadium, winning the ONE Lightweight MMA World Title in only his third professional mixed martial arts fight and becoming the first athlete in ONE history to hold world titles in both submission grappling and MMA.
A prediction kept in 128 seconds
Ruotolo had said before the fight that he would finish Lee in the first round, and he kept his word almost to the second. The American, already the reigning ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Champion, walked into the main event as a heavy underdog in the eyes of many, facing a two-division champion in his first MMA title fight. Lee, meanwhile, had spent the week talking about bigger stages, including a win over UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, and arrived in Bangkok defending the lightweight belt he had reclaimed after losing it to Ok Rae Yoon five years earlier. None of that mattered once the cage door closed. Ruotolo fought like a man who had already seen the finish, and 128 seconds later he had made it real.
The finish, blow by blow
The ending came in a blur. Ruotolo clipped Lee with a right hook and followed with a left hand to the chin that dropped the champion to the canvas. He swarmed immediately, landing ground-and-pound and taking full mount as Lee tried to scramble free. When Lee turned to escape, Ruotolo took his back without a wasted motion, locked in the figure-four and squeezed the rear-naked choke until Lee's face turned red. The champion made one last effort to peel the hand away, but the choke was already too deep, and he tapped at 2:08 of round one. It was the second stoppage defeat of Lee's professional career, and his first in more than a decade, and it left him with a record of 18 wins and 5 losses.

The finish followed a pattern that is becoming Ruotolo's signature. All three of his professional MMA wins have now come by rear-naked choke, and his first two victims included Lee's younger brother Adrian Lee, whose first professional loss also came by that same submission. Ruotolo beat the younger Lee brother, then beat the older one for a world title. For the Lee family, the defeat carried an extra sting: Christian had come into the fight with a personal score to settle over his brother's loss, and he left Bangkok having suffered the same fate.
Two belts, two sports, one first
The history of the night is what sets it apart from an ordinary title upset. Ruotolo already held ONE's welterweight submission grappling title, and by adding the lightweight MMA belt he became the first athlete in ONE Championship history to win world championships in both MMA and submission grappling. His twin brother Kade Ruotolo is also a ONE submission grappling titleholder, but Tye is now the first of the pair, and the first athlete in the promotion, to cross over and take a mixed martial arts crown as well. ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong added a US$100,000 performance bonus to the title, a reward for a finish that doubled as a piece of promotional history.
What Lee loses, and what he keeps
For Lee, the defeat ends his status as a two-division champion for the first time in four years. He entered Friday's event holding both the lightweight title at 170 pounds and the welterweight title at 185 pounds, and he leaves Bangkok with only the welterweight belt he won four years ago. The loss also closes a chapter that began when Ok Rae Yoon took the lightweight throne from him in 2021, a defeat Lee avenged to start his second reign, only to see that reign end at the hands of a 23-year-old in his third professional fight. Lee remains an accomplished grappler and one of the best fighters competing outside the UFC, but the result raises a hard question about where he goes next: defend the welterweight belt, chase an immediate rematch at lightweight, or rebuild against the division's new contenders.

What comes next
The lightweight division now has a new champion and a ready-made first challenger. Hours after Ruotolo's win, Magomed Magomedov stayed perfect at 16-0 by edging Lucas Gabriel via split decision in the main event of ONE Fight Night 49, also at Lumpinee Stadium, after stepping in on short notice to replace the injured Alibeg Rasulov. Gabriel, who had beaten former champion Ok Rae Yoon in June, suffered his first loss in ONE, and Magomedov's debut win immediately put him in the title conversation. A fight between the unbeaten Magomedov and the newly crowned Ruotolo is the obvious next step for the division, and it would test whether Ruotolo's grappling can carry him past a wrestler who has never lost. Elsewhere on the Bangkok cards, Yodphupa Petkiatpet beat Komawut FA Group by split decision, Titus Proctor stopped Maciej Karpinski with a body kick at 1:27 of round three, and Superball Sitcho knocked out Saksri Superlek Muaythai with a liver shot at 1:42 of the opening round. But the weekend belonged to one man and one choke: Tye Ruotolo walked into Lumpinee Stadium as a grappler trying MMA, and walked out as a two-sport world champion.
