Carpenter and Buchanan strike late to keep Chelsea unbeaten

Chelsea Women beat Roma Women 2-0 at Plough Lane on Wednesday night, turning a frustrating first half into a second-half success that kept their unbeaten start to the UEFA Women's Champions League league phase intact. Both goals came after the break, both were created by Wieke Kaptein, and both were scored by defenders — substitute Ellie Carpenter in the 51st minute and Kadeisha Buchanan in the 89th.

For long spells, it looked like being one of those European evenings when dominance does not become a lead. Chelsea reached half-time goalless despite repeatedly finding space in wide areas. The clearest warning came inside the opening eight minutes, when Alyssa Thompson surged into the Roma penalty area and struck a fierce shot that goalkeeper Rachele Baldi could only palm up onto the crossbar.

Lauren James also tested Baldi with a powerful drive, while Agnes Beever-Jones was denied by a superb last-ditch challenge from Shukurat Oladipo. Beever-Jones then nodded a James pass into the path of Kaptein, who lifted her effort over the bar. Chelsea had the territory and the chances, but not the finish — and Roma, organised and disciplined, survived to the interval with the score still 0-0.

Bompastor's half-time gamble pays off

Head coach Sonia Bompastor responded boldly. At half-time she withdrew both Thompson and James, sending on Carpenter and Sjoeke Nüsken. It was a decision that invited scrutiny, given the quality of the two players replaced, but it changed the game within six minutes.

Carpenter, making her 50th appearance in the competition, burst into the box after a gliding run, exchanged passes with Kaptein and fired a shot that squeezed under Baldi. The breakthrough rewarded exactly the direct, forward running Bompastor had wanted, and it settled a home crowd that had grown restless during a wasteful first half.

Carpenter later explained the half-time message, telling Disney+: "First half we struggled to score but we had good opportunities and at half-time the coach said we need to put away our chances. I just tried to help the team attack, go forward and get shots off." She added: "I'm happy I did and scored and helped the team get three points tonight."

Roma rarely threatened in return. Chelsea continued to create chances, but substitutes Melvine Malard and Nüsken both fired over the bar, and the visitors still had hope as the clock ran down. Their best chance of an equaliser arrived in the 80th minute, when Alayah Pilgrim danced past Lucy Bronze before powering her shot over the bar.

Buchanan seals it from a corner

Any remaining doubt disappeared with a minute of normal time remaining. From a short corner, Kaptein delivered a cross into the centre of the box and Buchanan rose to head it into the goal, completing a second assist of the night for the Dutch midfielder. Sky Sports' live commentary recorded the goal in the 89th minute as a header from the centre of the box, assisted by Kaptein with a cross following a corner.

It was a fitting reward for Kaptein, later named UEFA's Player of the Match. Her two assists told the story of the second half: first the exchange that freed Carpenter, then the set-piece delivery that found Buchanan.

Bompastor was pleased with the defensive side of the performance as much as the result. "I am really pleased with the solid performance in terms of defensive performance. It is good to have three clean sheets. When you want to go far, you need a solid defensive base," she said. "With the quality we have in the team, I am confident we will always create chances. We just need to be confident to score some of them."

Hannah Hampton, behind a back line including Bronze, Buchanan, Veerle Buurman and Sandy Baltimore, was rarely troubled. Keira Walsh and Malard, introduced for Erin Cuthbert and Beever-Jones, helped Chelsea manage the closing stages, while Giulia Dragoni replaced the injured Lexi Potter late on.

Seven points and still unbeaten

The win takes Chelsea to seven points from three league-phase matches, after a 1-0 home win over Austria Wien and a 0-0 draw away at OL Lyonnes. They remain unbeaten in Europe this season and have still not conceded a goal in the league phase, a record that will matter in the race for the top four and a direct route to the quarter-finals.

UEFA also noted that Chelsea have never lost to an Italian team, with four wins and one draw from five meetings, scoring 17 goals and conceding just one. Roma, by contrast, remain on one point from three matches, after a draw with OH Leuven and defeats by Barcelona and Chelsea.

Chelsea still have three league-phase fixtures to come, against Häcken, Paris Saint-Germain and OH Leuven. The immediate test is the trip to Häcken on 10 November, while Roma will look to revive their campaign at home to Servette on the same night.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Bayern München drew 2-2 with Real Madrid after fighting back from two goals down, Servette beat OH Leuven 5-1, Arsenal beat Benfica 3-0 thanks to an Alessia Russo hat-trick, and OL Lyonnes thrashed Inter 6-0. Defending champions Barcelona, on six points from two matches, were due to play HB Køge on Thursday, with a win enough to take them back to the top.

For Chelsea, though, the main lesson from Plough Lane was simpler. A first half without a goal did not become a problem, because Bompastor trusted her bench, Kaptein kept creating, and two defenders finished the chances that mattered. On a night when patience was tested, Chelsea found a way — and stayed unbeaten.
