Bournemouth Batter Manchester United 3-0 as Carrick's Crisis Deepens
Goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson condemned Manchester United to a 3-0 home defeat that left them 16th and Michael Carrick fighting for his job.

A miserable afternoon at Old Trafford
Manchester United slumped further into crisis on Sunday, 25 October 2026, with a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth in Premier League Matchday 8 at Old Trafford. The result stretched United's winless run to eight games in all competitions and left them 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone. For Michael Carrick, whose future as manager was already under intense scrutiny, it was another miserable afternoon in front of a home crowd that had arrived hoping for a response and left with familiar frustration.
Bournemouth, managed by Marco Rose, were fully deserving of the victory. They began the day behind United in the table after a difficult start, but they outclassed the 20-time English champions for long stretches, just three days after beating AC Milan 3-0.
Three goals, one collapse
The visitors opened the scoring in the 38th minute. Rayan connected sweetly with Justin Kluivert's free-kick to put Bournemouth ahead, punishing a United side that had offered little threat going forward. Five minutes later, the lead was doubled. Leny Yoro stumbled under pressure from Adrien Truffert, and the French full-back had the simple task of squaring the ball for Marcus Tavernier to tap into an empty net. At 2-0 down at half-time, United faced a mountain to climb, and the home supporters made their unhappiness clear.
Carrick turned to his bench at the interval, introducing Matheus Cunha for Youri Tielemans. Many expected captain Bruno Fernandes to be stripped and ready for the second half, but he remained among the substitutes, and United got no better. Inside the first minute of the restart, Evanilson found the net, only to be flagged offside.

Bournemouth continued to create the better chances. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens denied Rayan before the Brazilian winger fired wide after racing past Lisandro Martinez, who had come on for Ayden Heaven. The third goal finally arrived in the 71st minute, and it settled the contest beyond doubt. Evanilson, set up by Lewis Cook, rounded Lammens before curling in an exquisite finish from a narrow angle. It was a goal that summed up the afternoon: Bournemouth composed and clinical, United disorganised and exposed.
The Fernandes question
The dominant talking point was the absence of Fernandes from the starting line-up. Carrick's decision to drop his captain backfired publicly, as United lost heavily with their most creative player watching from the bench. Fernandes warmed up at one stage but was never sent on, even as Carrick used four second-half substitutions: Cunha, Lisandro Martinez, Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey.
Carrick insisted before kick-off that the omission was a football decision. Asked by Sky Sports whether Fernandes had been dropped for football reasons or something else, he replied simply: "Pure football." After the match, he added that Fernandes was fit and available but that the team picked had been chosen to try to win the game.
The reporting around the decision tells a more complicated story, and both sides matter. Fernandes had been critical of Carrick's tactics after a 4-1 thrashing by Champions League debutants Como on Wednesday. Speaking to TNT Sports, he said United had not put enough pressure on the ball and had adopted a mood of defeat after conceding early. He pointed to the staff's approach, saying it was a decision from the staff not to press man to man and sometimes to leave space behind, and arguing the team sometimes had to be braver and press high. Asked whether he was saying Carrick had got the tactics wrong, Fernandes replied that that was for the manager and staff to see, not him.
Carrick responded at the time by stressing effort and intensity, saying that whatever tactics a team played, if players did not run forward and did not run back, they were not going to win. He also declined at his Friday press conference to rule out dropping Fernandes or removing the armband, saying only that he would always do what was best for the football club. Whether the omission was purely a football call, a response to the Como comments, or both, the timing made it a statement selection, and the result ensured harsh judgement.
What the numbers say

The wider numbers make grim reading for United. For the third time in four seasons, Bournemouth have won 3-0 at Old Trafford, a record that underlines how completely the balance of this fixture has shifted. United have won just twice, against newly promoted Ipswich and Azerbaijani side Sabah, in 12 games in all competitions this season. A strong finish to last season during Carrick's interim spell in charge secured third place in the Premier League, but that run was aided by a lack of European or domestic cup football, and this season's congested calendar has exposed the squad's fragility.
The atmosphere told its own story. Carrick was taunted with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" from the Bournemouth fans, while home fans directed their fury at the club's owners, the Glazer family, rather than at Carrick. At full time, Carrick applauded the Stretford End and touched his chest; he later said it was appreciation for the fans, not a farewell.
For United, the questions now pile up faster than the answers. Another manager dismissed would be far from a quick fix for a club that has fallen dramatically since Alex Ferguson's retirement 13 years ago, but the current trajectory is difficult to defend: eight games without a win and one point above the relegation zone. Carrick said it was a tough situation and that he did not know what came next, while insisting he would always do what was best for the club.
