Perfect Barcelona Host Real Madrid in High-Risk El Clásico Showdown
Nine wins from nine, 39 goals scored and a 23-match home winning streak: Barcelona can open a nine-point gap over Real Madrid on Sunday — but a depleted defence, a suspended Vinícius and a 'high-risk' security tag mean nothing about this Clásico will be simple.

BARCELONA — The first El Clásico of the 2026/27 season arrives with the table, the form book and the authorities all pointing the same way: this is a fixture with everything on it. Leaders Barcelona, perfect after nine league games, host a Real Madrid side six points behind at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday night, and Spain's State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport has officially classified the match as a high-risk fixture, triggering reinforced security in and around the stadium.
Kick-off is at 9pm local time (8pm in the UK, 4pm ET in the US, midnight in Tbilisi) in what will be the 265th meeting between the clubs. The arithmetic of the title race is brutally simple. A Barcelona win stretches their lead over José Mourinho's side to nine points before November; a Madrid win drags it back to three. A draw keeps the gap at six, with Atlético Madrid currently sitting between the two rivals in second on 22 points.

Nine wins from nine, 39 goals scored and only nine conceded — a +30 goal difference that is the best start by any LaLiga side after nine games since the 1997/98 season, and a run that matches the all-time record Real Madrid set in 1968/69. Since September 2025, Barcelona have won 23 consecutive league games at home. Raphinha leads the scoring charts with 12 league goals, Lamine Yamal has eight, and 13 different players have scored for Flick's side already.
Yet Sunday's visitors are also the first opponent this season equipped to truly punish Barcelona's attacking identity. That much was shown in Paris on Tuesday, when Paris Saint-Germain inflicted Barcelona's first defeat of the campaign, 4-2, exposing once again the space their famous high defensive line leaves in behind. Flick was blunt afterwards: "We made too many mistakes, especially in ball possession, easy ball losses. We have to understand the mistakes happen because the players are not fresh. What they had to do the last couple of weeks is unbelievable."

Madrid are beginning to look like a team under Mourinho. Four straight wins in all competitions, including a 4-1 league victory over Sevilla — Mbappé scoring twice — and a midweek demolition of RB Leipzig in the Champions League, have steadied the Portuguese coach's second spell in charge. Mbappé has nine LaLiga goals and, alongside Yamal, is one of the leading candidates for Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony. Arda Güler is thriving in a playmaking role, Jude Bellingham is warming up, and record £140 million signing Yan Diomande is finding his stride.
But Madrid travel without Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian was shown a straight red card against Villarreal for pulling Nathan Saliba's hair, then handed a four-match suspension — two games for the offence and two for his aggressive protests toward referee Isidro Díaz de Mera — that also rules him out against Sevilla, Racing and Valencia. He has endured a difficult campaign, scoring just once in nine appearances, and Spanish daily AS described his absence as "more a solution than a problem" for Madrid. Bellingham, Courtois and Antonio Rüdiger all publicly backed him; he apologised to teammates and fans after the incident.
Mourinho, coaching his first Clásico since returning to the Bernabéu this summer, has already begun the mind games. After the Leipzig win he complained that his side have "24 hours less rest" than Barcelona, who played on Tuesday — while insisting that "confidence doesn't exist" for Clásicos. It is vintage Mourinho, and it lands in an atmosphere the authorities consider volatile. Relations between the clubs are described as at an all-time low amid the ongoing Negreira case, and Madrid's public complaints about refereeing — after the derby defeat at Atlético and the Vinícius dismissal — fuelled the high-risk classification reported by Mundo Deportivo.
Team news favours neither side's defensive depth. Barcelona are without Dani Olmo, who injured an adductor against PSG, plus Eric García and Andreas Christensen, while Jules Koundé is a doubt with an ankle problem and Roony Bardghji remains out. That could mean Cancelo, Cubarsí, Gerard Martín and Espart in front of Joan García, with Rodri and Pedri in midfield and Yamal, Fermín and Anthony Gordon supporting Raphinha up front.
Madrid, in addition to the suspended Vinícius, are missing Ferland Mendy, Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo through injury. One plausible Madrid XI has Valverde at right-back, Huijsen and Konaté in central defence, Cucurella at left-back, Tchouaméni and Güler in midfield, and Endrick, Bellingham and Diomande behind Mbappé.
Tactically, the game may turn on one duel: Mbappé's acceleration against Barcelona's high line. If PSG's blueprint holds, a bypassed first press leaves Barcelona's centre-backs stranded near halfway — exactly the space Mbappé exploits best.
History offers Barcelona encouragement. They have won four of the last five meetings: 2-0 at home last May, 3-2 in January's Supercopa final, 4-3 in the league in May 2025 and 3-2 after extra time in the Copa del Rey final in April 2025. Madrid's most recent win was 2-1 at the Bernabéu last October — and their only league win in that sequence.
Prediction is a fool's game in this fixture, but the shape of it is familiar: goals at both ends, Barcelona's depth against Madrid's counter-attacking threat. A 3-2 home win would feel like a continuation of everything this Barcelona side have been building — and it would turn a six-point lead into a nine-point statement before November.
If Mourinho's Madrid strike first and turn Camp Nou's nerves against the hosts, though, the race could be blown open. Either way, Sunday night should tell us how close the title race really is.
