Fleetwood's night of nights

Fleetwood Town produced one of the greatest shocks in Carabao Cup history on Tuesday night, beating Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in the club's history.

The League Two side, three divisions below the Premier League champions, were perfect from the spot. Fleetwood scored all five of their penalties, goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães' effort, and Conor Haughey converted the decisive kick to send the home supporters streaming onto the pitch in celebration.

It was Arsenal's first defeat by fourth-tier opposition since Bradford City beat them on penalties in the 2012 quarter-finals. On the same night, Bradford underlined the evening's lower-league theme by beating Peterborough United 2-0 at Valley Parade to join Fleetwood in the last eight.

A drone, then a shock lead

The night began strangely. Play was stopped after just 93 seconds because of a drone above the stadium, causing a delay of almost eight minutes before the match could resume.

When football finally took over, Fleetwood refused to be overawed. Mikel Arteta had made nine changes to his Arsenal side, and only Myles Lewis-Skelly and Viktor Gyökeres kept their places from the win over Everton. Teenagers Max Dowman and Marli Salmon started, while 18-year-old winger Ceadach O'Neill made his senior debut.

Fleetwood struck in the 21st minute. Harrison Neal's pass found Aaron Loupalo-Bi, on loan from Fulham, who muscled his way past 17-year-old Salmon before finishing low past debutant Arsenal goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Arsenal dominated possession after falling behind but struggled to turn that control into clear chances, and Kai Havertz headed a Dowman cross over the bar before half-time.

Gyökeres levels, Lynch stands firm

Arteta changed the shape of the game at half-time, introducing captain Martin Ødegaard and Ben White for Jurrien Timber and Salmon. The impact was swift. Five minutes into the second half, Gyökeres converted from close range after debutant O'Neill's delivery caused confusion in the Fleetwood box, making it 1-1 in the 50th minute.

Arsenal pushed hard for a winner. Havertz had an effort pawed over the bar by Lynch, Lewis-Skelly curled wide, and Havertz twice more failed to find the net as Ødegaard pulled the strings in midfield.

The closing stages turned against Arsenal. Substitute Ronan Coughlan was denied by Meslier at one end, and then Dowman was sent off late on after responding to a strong challenge from Neal, with referee Michael Salisbury producing a red card in the following scuffle.

Fleetwood still had to survive stoppage time. Eberechi Eze rolled the ball across the box to White at the back post, but Lynch kept his effort out on the line, and that proved to be Arsenal's final chance of normal time.

Perfect from the spot

The shootout, taken in front of the Fleetwood supporters, began with both sides scoring their first three penalties. Ødegaard, Havertz and Gyökeres netted for Arsenal, while Coughlan, Neal and Will Davies replied for the hosts.

Andy Cannon then put Fleetwood 4-3 ahead. Guimarães, introduced as a late substitute, stepped up next, but Lynch dived low to his left to save. That left Haughey with the chance to win the tie, and he dispatched his penalty into the top corner.

Because Haughey's kick settled the shootout at 5-3, Arsenal never took a fifth penalty. The arithmetic explains the scoreline: Fleetwood scored five out of five, Arsenal scored three of their four kicks, and Lynch's single save was the difference.

Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor was in tears at full time as supporters celebrated what he called the biggest night in the club's history in terms of the opposition coming to town. Lynch, who had also starred in normal time, said the side had taken heart from Grimsby Town's win over Manchester United last season.

"Amazing for the club, the town. Honestly it means everything to everyone," Lynch said. "We took heart from Grimsby beating Man Utd last year. We kind of compared it. The whole team throughout the game was magnificent."

Arteta was gracious in defeat but left in no doubt about the scale of the disappointment, calling it a very sad day for Arsenal. He refused to question his players' attitude, pointing instead to a failure to turn dominance of the ball and a string of chances into a winning margin before penalties.

"First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood for going through to the next round in the manner they've done it," Arteta said. "A really sad day for us."

Bradford join the party

Fleetwood will not be the only lower-league side in the quarter-final draw, which follows the remaining fourth-round ties on Wednesday. Bradford City beat Peterborough United 2-0 at Valley Parade on the same night, with Macaulay Gillesphey opening the scoring in the 13th minute and Adam Phillips adding the second in the 67th minute.

That result takes Bradford into the quarter-finals for the first time since their run to the Wembley final in 2013, when they also knocked Arsenal out on the way. For Fleetwood, though, Tuesday stands alone: a first quarter-final, a first win over the English champions, and a night Highbury will never forget.

Arsenal, meanwhile, must regroup quickly. They return to Premier League action away to Liverpool on Sunday, 1 November, and Arteta will know that no explanation can soften a night when the champions were beaten by a side from the fourth tier.
