Cabrera strike stuns Villarreal as Espanyol end winless run
Leandro Cabrera's second-half strike gave a turbulent Espanyol a priceless 1-0 win at Villarreal and ended their six-match winless run.

Cabrera delivers the moment Espanyol had been waiting for

Espanyol arrived at Estadio de la Cerámica on Friday night carrying the weight of a six-match winless run across all competitions, a dismissed coach, and a place in the relegation zone. They left with a 1-0 victory over Villarreal that felt like far more than three points. Leandro Cabrera's 60th-minute strike, the only goal of this LaLiga Matchday 11 contest, ended the visitors' drought, gave interim coach Sergio García a dream start, and handed the hosts a third home defeat of the season.
The scoreline barely tells the story of the evening. Villarreal, roared on by their home crowd, dominated the ball and the shot count, but Espanyol defended with discipline, rode their luck at key moments, and struck decisively when their chance came. It was their first win over Villarreal since January 2020.
A first half of frustration for the hosts

Villarreal began as the aggressors, and for long spells of the first half they looked the likelier scorers. They finished the night with 63 percent possession and outshot Espanyol, but could not find a way past goalkeeper Ángel Fortuño. Yet the breakthrough would not come, and the hosts' evening took a damaging turn after just 18 minutes when captain Gerard Moreno was forced off injured.
Moreno's departure robbed Villarreal of their captain and most experienced attacking reference point. His replacement, Nicolás Pépé, later went close twice, with strong shots passing near the crossbar and the post, but the equal measure of threat never quite became a goal. Espanyol goalkeeper Ángel Fortuño made five saves, and one powerful Sergi Cardona effort struck him rather than finding the net.
The first half ended goalless, and the pattern seemed set: Villarreal pressing, Espanyol absorbing, and the away side waiting for a set piece or a counter to change the game.
VAR drama, then Cabrera strikes
The second half brought the game's two defining moments in quick succession. In the 49th minute, Roberto Fernández thought he had put Espanyol ahead, only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR review found a foul in the build-up. For a side short on confidence, it could have been crushing. Instead, Espanyol refused to let the night slip away.
Eleven minutes later, the visitors struck for real. Bryan Zaragoza delivered a precise cross from the second phase of a set piece, and Cabrera, the veteran Uruguayan defender, met it with a left-footed finish from the edge of the six-yard box. It was his first league goal of the season, and it was worth its weight in gold. Péter Gulácsi had no answer, and suddenly Villarreal were chasing the scoreline.
From there, Espanyol's task was clear: protect the lead at all costs. They did so with organisation and no little courage, with Fortuño commanding his area and the back line throwing bodies in front of shots. Villarreal pushed hard in the closing stages, but the equaliser never arrived. Tajon Buchanan, who started and played 80 minutes before being replaced by fellow Canadian Tani Oluwaseyi, led the match with four shots, yet three were blocked and the other failed to test the goalkeeper.
A win shaped by a turbulent week
The context made the result all the more remarkable. Espanyol had travelled to Villarreal in turmoil. Coach Manolo González was dismissed after a humiliating Copa del Rey elimination at fourth-tier Sestao River, a 4-3 extra-time defeat that capped a miserable run. Sergio García, the former striker who had been coaching the reserve side, took charge on an interim basis, with newly appointed coach Eder Sarabia watching from the stands while serving a suspension carried over from his time at Elche.
García made bold calls, fielding six academy players in his starting lineup, and his side followed the plan without interference. The reward was a first victory in six matches in all competitions, five of them in the league, and a result that lifts the mood around the club even if the table remains tight. Reports differed on Espanyol's exact points and position, which will sharpen as the rest of Matchday 11 is played — but nobody at Espanyol will mind the fine print after a night like this.
What it means for both sides
For Villarreal, the defeat is a setback they could ill afford. They had been unbeaten in two league matches since a 1-0 defeat at Real Madrid following the international break, following a scoreless draw against Elche with a 2-1 win at Valencia in the Derbi de la Comunitat, and a midweek 5-0 Copa del Rey win over CD Manacor had extended the feel-good factor. Instead, they sit 10th on 12 points after 11 matches, at risk of sliding out of the top ten as the weekend's remaining fixtures are played.
Worse, injuries are mounting: Moreno joins Nathan Saliba and Ilias Akhomach in the treatment room, leaving head coach Iñigo Pérez stretched ahead of Tuesday's huge Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain. Papa Gueye, suspended here, returns next week against Getafe.
For Espanyol, the questions are different but no less pressing. Can one night at La Cerámica become a turning point rather than a one-off? García's interim reign could hardly have started better, and Sarabia will inherit a squad with fresh belief when he takes over on the training ground. If Cabrera's goal proves to be the moment the season turned, Friday, 30 October 2026 will be remembered as the night Espanyol found themselves again.
