Antonelli dominates in Austin but must wait for Formula 1 title

Kimi Antonelli dominated the United States Grand Prix from pole for his ninth win of 2026. But George Russell's eighth place means the Formula 1 title is not clinched yet, with the fight heading to Mexico City.

A commanding win from pole

Andrea Kimi Antonelli turned pole position into a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, but the Formula 1 championship will have to wait at least one more week. The Mercedes driver controlled all 56 laps at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, crossing the line in 1 hour, 35 minutes and 16.650 seconds to claim his ninth victory of the 2026 season. It was built on calm execution: a fast start, a decisive strategy call and a flawless final stint.

Antonelli made the perfect start from pole and immediately opened a two-second lead on the first lap. While Ferrari and Red Bull committed to two-stop strategies, Mercedes held its nerve with a one-stop plan. Antonelli briefly gave up the lead when he switched to hard tyres, but he was never out of contention. On lap 32, just seconds after Max Verstappen's slow second pit stop, he passed Charles Leclerc to retake first place — and he stayed in front for the rest of the race.

The strategy battle

That phase underlined the difference between the strategies. Verstappen had gone aggressive early, stopping for a second set of soft tyres and committing himself to two stops, but the gamble never paid off. His second stop was slow, and he could only make limited headway against Antonelli afterwards. Leclerc, by contrast, came alive after his stops. The Ferrari driver set the fastest lap of the race on lap 42, a 1:37.976, and used his late pace to close on Verstappen and move into second place. He finished 13.078 seconds behind Antonelli, with Verstappen a further 4.407 seconds back in third, 17.485 seconds off the win.

Ferrari could take encouragement from the pace of both cars, even if victory remained out of reach. Leclerc enjoyed the battles on the opening lap and later with Verstappen and Lando Norris, and he described his strategy as good, if not quite enough. Lewis Hamilton, his team-mate, also two-stopped and finished fourth, 18.515 seconds behind the winner, just one second behind Verstappen. Hamilton closed strongly in the final stint and believed that, without the late Virtual Safety Car, he might have had a genuine shot at a double podium for Ferrari. Instead, the neutralised closing laps froze the order at the front and ended his charge.

Midfield fight and Russell's difficult day

Behind the podium fight, the midfield battle produced one of the day's most interesting results. Lando Norris finished fifth for McLaren, 30.521 seconds behind Antonelli, after a one-stop gamble of his own. Isack Hadjar split the two McLarens in sixth for Red Bull, 34.373 seconds back, holding off Oscar Piastri, who was seventh. Hadjar had shown strong pace in his opening stint on soft tyres before a system issue in the pit lane compromised the rest of his race, yet he still brought home valuable points. Piastri, meanwhile, defended hard from George Russell in the closing laps, despite running on much older tyres, to keep seventh place.

Russell's afternoon was the one that kept the championship alive. The Mercedes driver finished eighth, 54.303 seconds behind his team-mate, after a difficult race that began with a five-second time penalty on the opening lap for leaving the track and gaining an advantage while fighting Piastri. The penalty dropped him behind the McLaren at the stops, and although his pace improved in his second stint, he could not find a way past Piastri and spent the remaining laps stuck behind him. Russell admitted afterwards that he did not have the pace to fight at the front, a frank assessment that matched the evidence on track.

Title still to be won

The title mathematics explain why Antonelli's dominant win was not quite enough. He arrived in Austin needing to leave with a 125-point lead over his nearest rival, with five races remaining, to clinch the championship. Instead, he now leads on 365 points, 123 clear of Russell on 242. Hamilton is third on 241, just one point behind Russell, with Verstappen fourth on 236 and Leclerc fifth on 233. Because Russell finished eighth and Hamilton fourth — rather than ninth or lower and fifth or lower respectively — the fight continues. Antonelli himself struck a measured tone afterwards, saying he knew the team was very close and that he hoped to clinch the title very soon.

There was late drama further back, too. Valtteri Bottas, Franco Colapinto and Ollie Bearman all failed to finish, with Bottas's stoppage triggering the second Virtual Safety Car with four laps remaining. That intervention effectively ended the late battles at the front, but it did not change the identity of the winner. Antonelli had already done the hard work, and he managed the restart and the closing laps with the same composure. Liam Lawson finished ninth for Racing Bulls and Pierre Gasly took the final point in tenth for Alpine, completing the list of ten point-scorers.

The championship now moves quickly to its next decisive moment. Five Grands Prix remain: Mexico City on 1 November, Brazil on 8 November, Las Vegas on 21 November, Qatar on 29 November and the Abu Dhabi finale on 6 December. Antonelli's next chance to seal the title comes in Mexico City next weekend, where a strong result could finally turn a commanding lead into a championship. After a weekend that began with a difficult Friday, Mercedes turned things around in qualifying and then in the race, and Antonelli's victory in Austin felt like a statement. He did not clinch the title on Sunday — but he left Texas closer than ever, with the championship now firmly within reach.
