Ryu Hae-ran fires bogey-free 64 with two eagles to seize halfway lead in Korea
The world No. 3 went 13 under through 36 holes at the BMW Ladies Championship, two clear of Kim Min-sun and Lauren Coughlin as she chases a home-soil title and a third LPGA victory of the season.

HAENAM, South Korea — Ryu Hae-ran soared into the 36-hole lead at the BMW Ladies Championship on Friday, firing a blistering bogey-free eight-under 64 at Pine Beach Golf Links to reach 13-under 131 and take a two-shot advantage into the weekend.
The world No. 3, playing her first LPGA event in Korea since late August, starred on the seaside layout 330 kilometres south of Seoul. Kim Min-sun matched her 64 and American Lauren Coughlin shot a bogey-free 66, with both chasers at 11-under 133. Julia Lopez Ramirez and Karis Davidson share fourth, three shots back at 10 under.
A front nine built on eagles

Ryu set the tone early, holing eagle putts on the first two par-5s of the par-72 course — the second and the sixth — after reaching both greens in two. On the sixth she knocked her iron approach close and converted, sending the home galleries roaring.
She added four birdies on the back nine, rolling in putts on the par-5 12th and 17th along with the par-3 13th and the par-4 18th. The closer was a statement: on the 18th she stuck her second shot to about two metres and buried the birdie putt to finish the day in front outright.
In calm conditions far kinder than Thursday's wind, Ryu hit every green in regulation and missed just one fairway. Over 36 holes she has missed only two fairways and a single green, yet she has not made a bogey all week. The low-scoring Friday saw 48 of the 82 players in the field break 70, compared with only 17 on Thursday.
Elite striking, stubborn putter

For all the ball-striking brilliance, the round could have been even lower. Ryu needed 32 putts to get around Pine Beach on each of the first two rounds, and she admitted the flat stick has been the weak link.
"Today was an amazing day. I really worried about the wind, but today's wind was much better than yesterday," Ryu said. "That is why I hit a lot of greens today. Everything is good for me. I am happy right now."
She added: "I was able to go after pins with short irons because I drove the ball so well today. But I missed a few short putts. I could have had an even better score today."
Ryu ranks among the LPGA Tour's best in advanced and conventional ball-striking statistics this season but sits outside the top 100 in putting stats — a season-long split that Friday's round captured in miniature.
A homecoming with major implications
The 25-year-old from the nearby town of Yeongam is chasing a victory that would resonate well beyond Haenam. Her two LPGA wins this season both came at major championships — the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and the Amundi Evian Championship — and she added a KLPGA Tour title at the Hite Jinro Championship earlier this month.
A win this weekend would be her third LPGA victory of 2026, her sixth career title on the tour, and her fourth trophy of the year across both tours. She would join Nelly Korda and Jeeno Thitikul as the season's only three-time winners.
Ryu trails Korda by 75 points in the Rolex Player of the Year race, and with Korda skipping the entire Asian swing, the door is ajar: three wins, or two victories plus a second and an eighth, would give Ryu a chance at the award. She also holds a slim edge in the Vare Trophy race, her 69.54 scoring average sitting 0.1 strokes ahead of Miyu Yamashita, while Korda will not play enough events to qualify.
"This is actually the third time I've been asked about the Vare Trophy, so let me be honest," Ryu said. "I'd be OK even if I didn't win it. I haven't really been thinking about the Vare Trophy today. Instead, I've been focusing on how to manage my game out there."
The chasing pack
Kim Min-sun, the 23-year-old KLPGA member playing only her second career LPGA event, matched Ryu's 64 with eight birdies in her own bogey-free round. The two-time KLPGA winner this season struck 13 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation, and a victory on Sunday would hand her full LPGA Tour playing rights without the need to go through qualifying.
"Now that I have a great opportunity at hand, I will try to stay locked in on my own rhythm and routine," Kim said. "I didn't come to this tournament trying to win it, and I am happy to be near the top of the leaderboard at this point."
Kim said it would be "an honor" to play with Ryu in the final group on Saturday — and she got her wish, with the two South Koreans teeing off together alongside Coughlin.
Coughlin, chasing her second victory of 2026, has played with Ryu twice this week and is clearly enjoying the duel. "Hae-ran and I get along really well. Her caddie, Martin (Bozek), is one of my really good friends. We always enjoy playing together," Coughlin said. "She is so good. So it is kind of fun to go toe-to-toe with her."
With rain in the forecast for the weekend, Coughlin expects a grind: "I prefer wind over rain, but I think if we can play, it is going to be a grind. The course is going to play way different."
For Ryu, the task is simple — keep the driver straight, keep the putter honest, and turn a homecoming into the defining weekend of a major-winning season.
