Canelo challenges Mbilli in Riyadh on Halloween afternoon
Canelo Alvarez challenges WBC champion Christian Mbilli in Riyadh on Saturday, with an early start timed for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.

Canelo returns as challenger in Riyadh
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez returns on Saturday 31 October 2026 in an unfamiliar role. He faces Christian Mbilli for Mbilli's WBC super middleweight title at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, live on DAZN Pay-Per-View. For Alvarez, it is a route back to a world title. For Mbilli, it is a chance to turn a title reign into a career-defining win.
This is Alvarez's first fight since his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025. Both men are returning after long layoffs since last September, according to fight-week preview coverage. That shared inactivity raises the central questions: can Alvarez still compete at the highest level, and can Mbilli handle the occasion?
The card is billed "Mexico vs the World". At the final pre-fight news conference on Thursday in Riyadh, all 18 fighters appeared on stage. The event was calm rather than heated. A WBC super middleweight title is on the line.
A Halloween afternoon start, by Canelo's request

The timing is unusual, and it is deliberate. The main card begins at 1pm ET, or 10am PT, on DAZN, with ringwalks at approximately 4:30pm ET, 1:30pm PT and 8:30pm GMT, or approximately 10:30pm in Riyadh. The "Before the Bell" prelims begin from 10am ET, or 7am PT, and are free to DAZN subscribers.
Timing was moved earlier than originally planned at Canelo's request so fans in the United States and Mexico can watch in the afternoon and still celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos in the evening. At the news conference, emcee Richard Schaefer of Canelo Promotions explained the change. He said Canelo wanted fans with young children to be able to watch early in the afternoon and then take their children trick-or-treating.
Schaefer said Canelo wanted "to make sure that his many fans who have young family, young children, are going to have an opportunity to do both: to watch his fight early afternoon, and then in the evening go and take their children to trick-or-treating and celebrate his victory." He also noted that Dia de los Muertos is one of the biggest Mexican holidays.
Do not assume a late-night main event: this is an afternoon card in North America, an evening card in Britain, and a late-evening card in Riyadh. Some listings differ, so check DAZN in your region.
The challenger and the champion

Alvarez enters as the challenger, a position he has rarely occupied in recent years. "I'm ready for Saturday. I'm the challenger now, but guess what? Always in my mind, I'm the champion, since I was a little kid," he said at the news conference. He also explained his choice of opponent: "I don't believe in shortcuts. I go straight with the champion. I already have the experience. I've been a champion many years, and I want to be a champion again."
Mbilli arrives as the defending WBC champion, unbeaten and in the prime years of his career, according to DAZN's preview. "I'm ready to shock the world, and that's it," Mbilli said. "I have a big respect for Canelo for all his career, and I want to congratulate him for this. But on Saturday, will be a different story, and I'm coming for the win."
That contrast is the heart of the fight: Alvarez brings experience and patience, Mbilli brings power and relentlessness. Bad Left Hook's preview notes Mbilli is a big power puncher who is never afraid to exchange, even when that has left him rocked before, and that Alvarez has not stopped an opponent in almost five years, since late 2021 against Caleb Plant.
A win restores Alvarez to world-title status; a win for Mbilli announces him as a genuine star.
A strong undercard beneath the main event
The undercard gives the afternoon real depth. Lindolfo Delgado faces Arthur Biyarslanov for the vacant IBF super lightweight belt. Jaime Munguia faces Nikita Zon, and Rafael Espinoza defends his WBO featherweight title against Ricardo Blandon. For fans tuning in early, the undercard is not filler.
How to watch, and the reported safety background
Canelo against Mbilli is live on DAZN Pay-Per-View, priced at $79.99 in the United States and £24.99 in the United Kingdom. The "Before the Bell" prelims are free to DAZN subscribers, while the main card is the pay-per-view portion. Pricing varies by market, so confirm availability in your region.
There is also reported background that fight-week coverage has not ignored. Bad Left Hook has reported that Riyadh has faced Houthi attacks, that the airport reopened after a closure of more than two weeks, and that the US State Department advised non-emergency personnel to leave. NY Fights, meanwhile, reported that two ballistic missiles fired toward Riyadh were intercepted on Thursday. This is reported background only, not a claim that the fight is in doubt. No postponement has been announced.
Why Saturday matters
Saturday is about more than one belt: whether Alvarez can become champion again after defeat and a layoff, and whether Mbilli can defend his title against the biggest name of his career. If Alvarez wins, he is champion again on a new holiday date of his own making. If Mbilli wins, he has shocked the world, exactly as he promised. Watch early.
