Wembanyama Scores 29 in Three Quarters as Spurs Rout Blazers for Eighth Straight Win
Victor Wembanyama scored 29 points in 24 minutes as the Spurs beat the Trail Blazers 125-103.

A star turn in three quarters
Victor Wembanyama needed only three quarters to decide a basketball game on Saturday night. The San Antonio Spurs star scored 29 points in 24 minutes, then watched the entire fourth quarter from the bench as his team routed the Portland Trail Blazers 125-103 at Moda Center for an eighth consecutive victory. San Antonio improved to 8-2, while Portland fell to 6-3 and dropped its second straight game. Wembanyama added seven rebounds and three assists, shooting 9 of 13 from the field, 3 of 6 from three-point range and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. It was the kind of performance that made the rest of the night feel like a formality long before the final buzzer.
The third-quarter burst
The Spurs led by 15 points at halftime, 64-49, and then removed any doubt with a 45-point third quarter on 18-of-27 shooting. Wembanyama scored 13 points in the period, including a tip-in and a three-pointer during a personal 5-0 run that stretched the advantage to 84-59. The lead reached 30 points on a Dylan Harper basket with 4:14 remaining in the quarter, and San Antonio carried a 109-76 lead into the fourth. With the result settled, all five Spurs starters sat out the final quarter, and the visitors still led comfortably throughout it. San Antonio never trailed in the game and led by as many as 35 points.

Efficiency over volume
What made Wembanyama's night stand out was how little he needed to do to dominate it. He took only 13 shots, scored 16 points before halftime, and still finished with a game-high 29. Coach Mitch Johnson praised the discipline behind that efficiency, saying that Wembanyama did not fight the game and let it come to him. The supporting cast followed the same pattern. Devin Vassell added 15 points, Stephon Castle had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, reserve Julian Champagnie scored 14 points with four three-pointers, and Dylan Harper contributed 13 points and seven rebounds. Keldon Johnson added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench, giving San Antonio production from every part of its rotation.
San Antonio's control of the details
The Spurs won the game in the margins as well as on the scoreboard. They outrebounded Portland 51-38 and made 28 of 30 free throws, including 20 of 21 in the first half. Their 42-point second quarter featured seven three-pointers and 17 of 18 free throws, with Champagnie making all three of his attempts from deep in the period. San Antonio finished at 44.4 percent from the field and 17 of 44 from three-point range, a steady diet of open looks and trips to the line that kept Portland chasing the game from the opening minutes. The Blazers never found a run to answer with, and every time they trimmed the deficit, the Spurs had a reply waiting.

Portland's long night
Portland had no answer for Wembanyama and no rhythm of its own. Deni Avdija led the Trail Blazers with 15 points, including 10 before halftime, and Scoot Henderson added 13. Damian Lillard registered 12 points and seven assists, while rookie Yang Hansen had 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the first double-double of his career. Reserves Jrue Holiday and Chris Youngblood scored 11 points apiece, but the balance was not enough. Portland shot 41.7 percent from the field and just 9 of 35 from three-point range, and did not make a three-pointer until the final seconds of the game. The Blazers were also playing on the second night of a back-to-back after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers the previous night, and their legs looked heavy as the Spurs pulled away.
What the streak means
Eight straight wins have turned a promising start into a statement. The Spurs are now 3-0 on the second night of back-to-back games this season, a mark that speaks to the youth and depth of the roster as much as to its star. Wembanyama sets the tone, but the wins keep coming from different places: a bench that scores, a defense that rebounds, and a team that shoots free throws well enough to punish every foul. San Antonio next visits the Phoenix Suns on Monday, 9 November, with a chance to stretch the streak to nine. It is still early in the season, and one road win in November settles nothing, but the Spurs are no longer sneaking up on anyone.
