Wagner's Fourth-Quarter Explosion Lifts Magic Past Knicks, 111-102
Franz Wagner scored 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as Orlando overturned a 12-0 start and a four-point deficit to beat the defending champion Knicks 111-102 at Madison Square Garden for its first win of the season.

A nightmare start at the Garden
The Orlando Magic finally have a win, and they earned it in dramatic fashion. On Sunday night at Madison Square Garden, Orlando overturned a fourth-quarter deficit to beat the defending champion New York Knicks 111-102, ending a winless start and handing the champions a third straight defeat. The final quarter told the story: Orlando outscored New York 40-27, turning a four-point deficit after three quarters into a nine-point road victory.
Wagner takes over the fourth quarter
The night started in the worst possible fashion. New York raced to a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes, and Orlando looked in danger of being overwhelmed before the game had begun. Instead, the Magic steadied themselves, worked back into the contest, and stayed within touching distance through the middle quarters. By the end of the third quarter, New York still led, but only by four points, and Orlando had kept the game alive long enough for one player to change it.
That player was Franz Wagner. The Orlando forward finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, a near triple-double that underlined how complete his contribution had been. What made it remarkable was its timing. Wagner scored 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, taking over precisely when Orlando needed a leader. As New York tried to protect its lead, Wagner attacked, scored, created for others and controlled the tempo, turning a close game into a surge the home crowd could not stop.
Wagner had been expected to carry a heavier burden, for reasons beyond the scoreboard. Orlando arrived without its star, Paolo Banchero, who is out for several weeks with a high ankle sprain, with an MRI confirming the injury, per ESPN via Heavy. Losing a player of Banchero's importance left Orlando as a clear underdog against the defending champions. Wagner's response was to play the leading role the moment demanded, and his fourth quarter showed he could do it against the best opposition.

Support, shooting and a champions' collapse
He was not alone. Desmond Bane scored 22 points, giving Orlando a second reliable scoring threat and keeping pressure on New York's defence. Tristan da Silva added 19 points, continuing his value as a scorer from the bench, while Anthony Black scored 18 points in his first game of the season after missing the opening two games. Together, they gave Wagner the support a comeback requires: when one player takes over late, others must still make shots, defend and keep the ball moving.
Orlando's shooting from long range was another decisive factor. The Magic finished 18-of-42 from three-point range, a mark that kept them in the game when New York threatened to pull away and stretched the lead once Wagner caught fire. In a game decided by nine points, that outside shooting mattered. It punished New York for collapsing on drives, rewarded ball movement, and gave Orlando a way to score quickly during the run that decided the contest.
New York had plenty of production from its leading players, but not enough at the decisive moment. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 28 points, continuing his role as the team's primary scorer and creator. Karl-Anthony Towns added 22 points and 14 rebounds, while OG Anunoby also scored 22 points. On most nights, three players reaching at least 22 points would be enough to win. On this night, it was not enough to withstand Orlando's fourth quarter.
The contrast between the teams' seasons is now stark. Orlando's victory was its first of the season, improving its record to 1-2 after two home defeats. For New York, the loss was a third in a row, leaving the defending champions at 0-3 and searching for answers far earlier than expected. A championship team is judged over a long season, not three games, but an 0-3 start brings questions about rhythm, execution and late-game composure, all exposed in the final quarter.

A worrying end, and what comes next
There was, however, a worrying moment that took some shine off Orlando's win. With about two minutes left, guard Jalen Suggs suffered a non-contact right-knee injury on an uncontested fast break, collapsing as he went up for what looked like an easy basket. He left the game hurt, and at research time no official update on the severity had been given, with details still pending. Suggs had contributed four points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals in 34 minutes, and his importance to Orlando's defence and energy made his departure a concern.
For now, Orlando can only wait for more information on Suggs while taking encouragement from a win that required resilience from start to finish. The Magic trailed 12-0, were without their star before the game, trailed after three quarters, and still found a way to win on the champions' floor. That kind of victory can change the feeling around a team, especially one that had started with two defeats and a growing injury list. It showed belief, depth, and that Wagner can lead when the moment is biggest.
The challenge now is to build on it. One win does not solve Orlando's injury problems, but it gives the Magic something tangible to take into their next game, against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, according to ClutchPoints. For New York, the task is different: the champions must find a first win, rediscover late-game control, and prove that an 0-3 start is a slow beginning rather than a warning sign. On Sunday night, though, the story belonged to Orlando, to Wagner's fourth quarter, and to a comeback that turned an early collapse into a first victory.
