Punter's 23 carries Barcelona past Bayern in Munich

FC Barcelona left Munich with a hard-earned EuroLeague win on Tuesday night, beating Bayern Munich 88-84 in Regular Season Round 8 at SAP Garden. Kevin Punter scored 23 points to lead the visitors, who survived a late Bayern rally and closed the game at the free-throw line to claim their fifth win in eight EuroLeague rounds.

Barcelona led for much of the night but never shook off a stubborn Bayern side. The visitors took the first quarter 21-17, saw Bayern edge the second 25-20 to lead 42-41 at half-time, then won the third 23-19 and the fourth 24-23. The four-point margin reflected a game that stayed within reach until the final minute, when Barcelona's composure at the stripe proved decisive.

Barcelona built a 13-21 lead before closing the first quarter 17-21, with Tyrese Martin prominent early. The referees were Milan Nedovic, Tomasz Trawicki and Thomas Bissuel.

Bayern's late push falls just short

Bayern made the running at times, but never led for long. After falling behind in the first quarter, they fought back to a one-point half-time lead behind Andreas Obst and Miles Norris, and they stayed in touch through a third quarter in which Barcelona's size and guard play began to tell.

The decisive stretch came late. Bayern clawed back to within one point at 78-79, with MarJon Beauchamp's break capping the comeback, and SAP Garden sensed a first EuroLeague home win against Barcelona. Instead, the hosts coughed up the ball at the worst moments. A 14th turnover followed the comeback basket, another came at 78-81, and a tying three-point attempt would not fall. Barcelona, by contrast, made its free throws when it mattered, and Punter held his nerve from the line down the stretch to seal an 88-84 win.

Punter's 23 points were the game's high mark and, according to the club, his best scoring night of October. He scored in every phase of the contest: sparking Barcelona in the second quarter, answering Bayern triples after the break, and then steering the visitors home in the fourth alongside smart play from Juan Núñez.

He was far from alone. Tyrese Martin scored 12 points and Josh Nebo added 12 points and nine rebounds, giving Barcelona an interior presence when the perimeter game went cold. Justin Robinson chipped in 11, Olek Balcerowski added nine, Umoja Gibson scored seven and Tosan Evbuomwan five. The spread of scoring mattered on a night when Barcelona were, in the club's own description, inaccurate from the perimeter for long stretches.

Bayern's scoring was led by Miles Norris, a former blaugrana, with 17 points, matched by Rokas Jokubaitis with 17 points and seven assists. Obst finished with 14, Austin Wiley added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Johannes Thiemann scored six. Bayern remain on two EuroLeague wins and are still waiting for a first home victory against Barcelona, despite a performance their own report described as hard-fought and unrewarded.

What the result means in Round 8

The win is Barcelona's third in a row in all competitions and lifts them to five wins from eight EuroLeague rounds, keeping them in the top half of the table at this early stage. For Bayern, it is a third consecutive EuroLeague defeat, and another night in which a strong home performance went without a reward in front of more than 11,100 spectators.

Elsewhere in Round 8 on Tuesday, Paris won 99-93 at Dubai, Crvena Zvezda beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 100-78, Panathinaikos edged Olimpia Milano 80-75, Valencia beat Fenerbahçe 86-78 and Real Madrid won 104-86 at Baskonia. Those results underline how tight the early standings are: Barcelona's road win in Munich is exactly the kind of result that separates the top half from the chasing pack.

Valencia next at the Palau

Barcelona do not have long to enjoy the win. Their ninth EuroLeague game comes at home against Valencia Basket on Friday 30 October at the Palau Blaugrana, a quick turnaround against a side that has just beaten Fenerbahçe. Bayern, meanwhile, head to Serbia for the second leg of their double week, with a road game at Crvena Zvezda Belgrade on Thursday. For Barcelona, the lesson from Munich is encouraging: even when the shots do not fall, Punter and a deep supporting cast can find a way to win on the road.
