Alexander Zverev moved into the Shanghai Masters semi-finals on Thursday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Alex de Minaur. The top seed completed the quarter-final in 78 minutes and will next face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

## Serving makes the difference

The tournament’s official report records 10 aces and 35 points won from 44 first serves for Zverev. Those numbers helped the German protect the advantages he created in each set against an opponent whose movement can make rallies difficult to finish.

Zverev broke at 2-2 in the opening set, then saved three break points in the following game. The second set also contained a significant defensive moment: he saved two break points to hold for 3-3 before taking De Minaur’s serve in the next game.

The result extended Zverev’s lead in their tour-level meetings to 9-4. It also secured his third semi-final appearance in Shanghai and his first there since 2019.

## Davidovich Fokina is the next obstacle

The other quarter-final in that section ended early. Davidovich Fokina was leading Arthur Gea 4-1 when the Frenchman retired with an injury. The Spaniard therefore advances to Saturday’s semi-final without having to complete a full match on Thursday.

That contrast in workload is relevant to the next round, but it is not a prediction. Zverev’s controlled straight-sets win limited his own time on court, while Davidovich Fokina had already come through demanding matches earlier in the tournament.

For De Minaur, the missed break opportunities were the clearest route back into the contest. For Zverev, combining aggressive first-strike tennis with holds under pressure proved sufficient to keep both sets on his terms and preserve his chance of reaching the championship match.
