Vancouver Whitecaps FC are one win away from the top seed in Major League Soccer's Western Conference, and the night that moved them to the brink belonged, fittingly, to Brian White.

White scored his 100th MLS goal as Vancouver beat San Diego FC 4-1 at BC Place on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, in front of 21,718 supporters. Aleksa Cvetkovic, Ryan Gauld and Bruno Caicedo also scored for the hosts, while Onni Valakari replied late for the visitors. The result lifted Vancouver to 17 wins, eight draws and seven defeats, good for 58 points, and stretched their lead over second-placed FC Dallas to four points with two regular-season matches remaining.

Vancouver can now clinch the West's top seed with a home win against Seattle on Saturday, or if Dallas drop points. For San Diego, the defeat ended their playoff hopes. They are 8-13-11 for 35 points and have now gone 10 matches without a win.

The opening exchanges suggested San Diego had not travelled merely to make up the numbers. Cédric Bakambu had two good chances in the 14th minute, sprinting clear before Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka stopped his first effort, then seeing his rebound headed away on the goal line by Mathias Laborda.

## Cvetkovic opens the scoring, White reaches 100

Cvetkovic opened the scoring in the 24th minute. The midfielder, in only his fourth start since joining Vancouver in August after three seasons in the Serbian SuperLiga, directed Laborda's ball across goal into the net with his left foot for his first MLS goal. Gauld helped keep the move alive, and the finish, low and first-time from just beyond the six-yard box, gave goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega little chance.

White's milestone arrived in the 41st minute. Oliver Larraz delivered an excellent diagonal cross from the left, White made a fading run to the back post, arrived unmarked and directed his header easily past Sisniega from close range. It was White's team-leading 18th MLS goal of the season, his 19th across all competitions, and his first in six matches after a scoring drought dating back to a 3-3 home draw with D.C. United on 26 September.

The goal made White the 17th player in MLS history to reach 100 league goals. The 30-year-old has scored 98 goals as a Whitecap across all competitions since joining Vancouver in a 2021 trade from Red Bull New York. Afterwards, he kept the landmark in perspective.

"It's a nice achievement, something I've always wanted and had my eyes on, if I'm being honest," White said. "These things are nice, but we want to win the MLS Cup. I want to win the MLS Cup. That's first and foremost on my mind."

Head coach Jesper Sorensen was pleased with the manner of the performance as much as the scoreline. "We were aggressive and played fast," Sorensen said. "I think the team was on the front foot from the start. We played optimistic and I was happy with that."

## Gauld and Caicedo complete the rout

Vancouver did not ease off after halftime. Gauld made it 3-0 in the 66th minute with a diving header, converting a ball from Rayan Elloumi, and also earned an assist on Cvetkovic's opener. It was Vancouver's 67th goal of the MLS regular season, the most the club have scored in a single MLS regular season.

Caicedo then completed the scoring for the hosts in the 76th minute, beating Sisniega on a two-on-one breakaway after sprinting clear and firing home from the centre of the box. By then Thomas Muller had already returned to the pitch. The veteran came off the bench in the 74th minute for his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury on 6 October against the Chicago Fire, having missed four matches.

San Diego finally found a way through in the 83rd minute, when substitute Valakari headed home to make it 4-1. It was only a consolation, though, and the visitors' frustration showed late on. Elloumi was sent off deep into second-half stoppage time, in the 95th minute, after receiving a second yellow card for delaying a restart.

The wider context made the evening even sweeter for Vancouver. Earlier in the day, Dallas lost 2-0 to the Columbus Crew, opening the four-point gap at the top of the West. Vancouver finished second in the West last season and went on to lose the MLS Cup final to Miami, and White said momentum matters now, but only alongside performance. "Every time we go on the field we want to win the game," he said. "For us, it's focusing on what we can do."

For San Diego, the defeat closed a painful chapter. After finishing top of the West in their first season in 2025, they were trying to become the first MLS expansion club to reach the playoffs in each of their first two seasons since Nashville in 2020-21. Instead, they were eliminated with two matches left and will finish the regular season trying to end a winless run that now stands at 10 matches, with five draws and five defeats in that stretch. Their next match is at St. Louis on Saturday.

Vancouver, by contrast, head into the Seattle match with form, a milestone and a clear prize in sight. A win at BC Place would secure home-field advantage through the Western Conference playoffs and confirm a regular season that has already produced a club scoring record. White's century will be remembered as the night the Whitecaps took a decisive step towards it, but the striker himself has already moved the target on. The 100 goals are banked. The MLS Cup, he insists, is the one that matters.
