## A final rescued from a nightmare start

Valentin Vacherot did not so much win the Swiss Indoors Basel final as rescue it. The 27-year-old from Monaco lost the first set to Jiří Lehečka in a hurry, trailed by a double break, and for a long stretch on Sunday at St. Jakobshalle looked like a man arguing with himself as much as with his opponent. Then the match turned. Vacherot beat the eighth-seeded Czech 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 54 minutes on 1 November 2026 to claim his second career ATP title and his first at ATP 500 level.

It was a victory shaped by patience rather than perfection. Vacherot dropped serve three times in the opening set, but saved all five break points he faced across the next two sets, according to Infosys ATP Stats. He broke for 3-1 in the second set, held firm while serving it out, then broke early in the decider. When Lehečka's two-handed backhand landed just long on the final point, Vacherot waved his racquet to the Basel crowd.

"I ended up playing a really solid second and third set," Vacherot said afterwards. "I had to hold tight in the second set because even until the last game he had break points. Then I started serving much better in the third set and that helped me a lot."

He added: "I hit really good shots at the right moments and I think sometimes it's about not playing perfect for the whole match and just playing good when it matters."

## How the match slipped away from Lehečka

Lehečka, 24, had every reason to believe the trophy was his after the first set. His serving and returning were sharp, Vacherot was visibly frustrated, and the Czech had already survived a demanding route to the final, beating Stan Wawrinka in the Swiss great's final Basel match, Daniel Altmaier and Jerome Kym before coming from a set down against Jan-Lennard Struff. The final looked like a reward for that resilience.

Instead, it became another lesson in how quickly a final can change. Vacherot later apologised to his coach, Benjamin Balleret, after the pair had exchanged words during the difficult opening set. The tension seemed to clear his mind: he stopped chasing perfect tennis and waited for Lehečka's level to dip.

The decisive moments were small rather than spectacular. An early break in the second set gave Vacherot a lead he refused to surrender. In the third, a game in which Lehečka missed four backhands ended with a drop shot into the net, and Vacherot protected the break, escaping trouble at 3-2.

For Lehečka, the numbers are stark: 2-7 in ATP finals, 0-3 at 500 level, and a fifth straight final defeat. His ranking will still rise six places to No. 15 on Monday, yet that consolation will mean little until he finds a way through a final.

## A week built on ranked scalps

Basel was not a fortunate draw for Vacherot. He repeatedly beat better-ranked players, and the final was his third Top-25 win of the week. He defeated world No. 11 Rafael Jodar 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(5) in a three-set second-round match, then beat Holger Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, he overcame world No. 13 Taylor Fritz 7-6(5), 6-3, a result that underlined how comfortable he had become on the fast indoor court.

The final also reversed a recent head-to-head: Lehečka had beaten Vacherot in Tokyo earlier in October, but Vacherot now leads their series 2-1.

His indoor record this season now stands at 9-1. Indoor hard courts suit his game: the ball comes through quickly and his serve gains value.

## What the title changes for Vacherot

The historic note is genuine. Vacherot is the first Monegasque player to win an ATP 500 title since the series began in 2009. His only previous title came in far more surprising circumstances: at the 2025 Shanghai Masters, where he came through qualifying and beat his cousin Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final. He now joins Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as a player to have won titles in both Shanghai and Basel, unexpected company for a man ranked No. 204 when his Shanghai run began.

The ranking picture needs a brief clarification. The ATP report published on the day of the final listed Vacherot as No. 31, his position entering the tournament. The title takes him back into the top 30, to No. 27, when the rankings are updated on Monday. That captures his recent journey: unseeded in Basel a year after his Shanghai breakthrough, and now back inside the top 30.

There is little time to enjoy it: Vacherot faces Djokovic in the first round at the Paris Masters, while Lehečka opens against Alex Michelsen. Those matches will test whether Basel was a peak or a platform. The evidence points towards the latter — five wins, three Top-25 opponents beaten, and a final won from a losing position.

The result also closed an indoor weekend that included Carlos Alcaraz's Vienna title, but Basel belonged to Vacherot. A year after Shanghai announced him, Basel confirmed him.
