# A teenager, 33 seconds, and a road win to remember

Matthew Schaefer did not need long to turn regret into redemption. Thirty-three seconds into overtime on Thursday, 29 October 2026, the 19-year-old New York Islanders defenceman finished a 2-on-1 rush with Simon Holmstrom, firing a wrist shot from the right circle off the left post and past Minnesota Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt to seal a 4-3 victory at Grand Casino Arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

It was Schaefer's second goal and third point, capping a demanding, historic night. He played 30:01, a career-high 35 shifts, in his second straight game over 30 minutes. He had tied the game once, helped create another goal, and then watched a late clearing error help Minnesota force overtime. Overtime gave him the last word.

"I was happy to get that one there," Schaefer said. "'Pager' made a nice play up, and 'Homer' was going backside. So, I just took whatever's given. You get a big win against a big team, and keep it rolling."

The winner also placed Schaefer alone in NHL history. He became the first teenage defenceman with three career overtime goals, breaking a tie with Cam Fowler's two. It was his fifth career game-winning goal, matching Rasmus Dahlin and Mikhail Sergachev for third-most by a teenage defenceman. His point streak reached six games, career-high-tying, with one source putting the run at three goals and three assists.

## A wild start, then Schaefer answers

Minnesota struck almost immediately. Joel Eriksson Ek opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the game, giving the Wild a 1-0 lead before the Islanders had found any rhythm on the road.

Schaefer answered at 16:36 of the first period. After Emil Heineman's shot produced a rebound, Schaefer finished it to tie the game 1-1.

The Islanders then took the lead early in the second period. Bo Horvat scored on the power play 1:41 into the period, with Holmstrom assisting and Schaefer adding the secondary assist, to make it 2-1. That secondary assist also made Schaefer the sixth teenage defenceman with 15 career multipoint games.

Minnesota, the Central Division leader, would not go away. Quinn Hughes tied the game 2-2 at 17:21 of the second period, sending the teams into the final period level and setting up a tense third.

## Pelech, Boldy, and a late twist

Adam Pelech gave New York a 3-2 lead 7:14 into the third period, scoring his first goal of the season. At that point, the Islanders were in position to close out a strong road performance, having already survived the loss of Ryan Pulock, who left with an upper-body injury and did not return, leaving them with five defencemen for much of the night.

Minnesota found one more answer. Matt Boldy tied the game 3-3 at 16:07 of the third period, with 3:53 left in regulation, after a Schaefer clearing error. The goal salvaged a point for the Wild and sent the game to overtime, where Schaefer had already shown a taste for the dramatic.

In overtime, there was no long feeling-out process. Schaefer attacked on the rush with Holmstrom, kept the puck, and chose the shot. The wrist shot from the right circle beat Wallstedt on the blocker side, off the left post, and the Islanders had their second straight win.

## History in context

The numbers around Schaefer's night tell a story that goes beyond one game. Three career overtime goals is now a record for a teenage defenceman. Five career game-winning goals puts him alongside Dahlin and Sergachev in that teenage-defenceman ranking. Fifteen career multipoint games, reached with the secondary assist on Horvat's goal, is another marker of how consistently he has produced, not merely how spectacularly he has finished individual games.

The workload matters too. Thirty-one seconds short of 31 minutes, across a career-high 35 shifts, is heavy for any defenceman, let alone a 19-year-old playing short-handed after Pulock's exit. Doing it for a second straight game over 30 minutes underlines how much trust the Islanders already place in him.

That trust was visible after the late tie. Schaefer did not retreat after the clearing error that led to Boldy's goal. He went back out, attacked in overtime, and decided the game himself. That sequence — mistake, recovery, winner — may matter as much as the record itself.

## What the result means

For the Islanders, the win improved their record to 7-4-2. It was their second straight victory, and the second time this season they have won back-to-back games. They finished a three-game Central road trip with four of six points, a solid return from a difficult swing.

For Minnesota, the loss ended a three-game winning streak. The Wild fell to 9-4-2, but remained Central Division leaders, and they at least took a point from a game in which they trailed in the third period.

In goal, Ilya Sorokin made 22 saves on 25 shots for the win. Wallstedt stopped 22 shots but allowed four goals, on the Associated Press line used here.

New York now returns home to host the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, Halloween, at UBS Arena. After a road trip defined by resilience, a short-handed defence and a teenager's overtime history, the Islanders arrive home with momentum — and a reminder, delivered in 33 seconds, of how quickly Schaefer can change a game.
