## A historic first on the sand

Beach wrestling will make its Summer Youth Olympic Games debut at Dakar 2026, contested over two days, on 7 and 8 November, at Saly Beach West in Senegal. The occasion is doubly historic: Dakar 2026 is the first Olympic event ever held in Africa, and beach wrestling is the only wrestling discipline on the Dakar programme. For a sport built for open air, sunshine and a circle of sand, the setting could hardly fit better — and for the teenagers entered, the weekend will be the biggest stage of their young careers so far.

## How the two days are organised

United World Wrestling has published entries across eight weight classes: four for women, at 45 kg, 55 kg, 65 kg and 75 kg, and four for men, at 60 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg and 90 kg. In total, 96 athletes are expected to compete. Each weight class will be contested from its group stages through to its finals in a single day, so no wrestler has to carry a result, or a disappointment, overnight. Sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. local time on both days. Saturday, 7 November, features the women's 55 kg and 75 kg classes alongside the men's 60 kg and 80 kg classes. Sunday, 8 November, features the women's 45 kg and 65 kg classes alongside the men's 70 kg and 90 kg classes. Beach wrestling will be one of six sports hosted at Saly Beach West.

## Team USA: Hruby leads, Fry and Apostol follow

USA Wrestling has confirmed a three-woman team for Dakar, and its shape tells the story of the weekend. Matilda Hruby will lead off for the United States at 75 kg on Saturday, 7 November, while Piper Fry at 45 kg and Aleia Apostol at 65 kg will compete on Sunday, 8 November. Hruby arrives as the form wrestler of the trio, coming off a 75 kg world title run at the U17 Beach Wrestling World Championships in Baku in August, after also winning beach and freestyle gold at the U17 Pan American Championships earlier in 2026. USA Wrestling reports that she is 12-0 in international matches this year and has conceded only two points across her eight international beach wrestling victories. Fry, who finished her first U17 Beach Wrestling World Championships appearance with a 1-3 record at 45 kg, earned her Dakar place by winning the U17 division at the 2026 Carolina Beach Nationals and World Team Qualifier in May. Apostol, who also won at Carolina Beach in May and won freestyle gold at the Pan American Championships in April, returns to beach wrestling competition in Dakar for the first time since earning her world team spot. The Americans will be led by head coach Tim Box, assisted by four-time beach wrestling world champion Eliana Bommarito.

## Georgia, Senegal and the wider field

Georgia will be represented by Davit Mdzevashvili in the men's 60 kg class on Saturday and Luka Makharadze in the men's 70 kg class on Sunday, giving Georgian supporters a wrestler to follow on each day of the competition. Host nation Senegal will have home interest throughout the weekend, including Ndeye Diatta in the women's 45 kg class and Babacar Mbaye in the men's 60 kg class, while national coach Abdoulaye Thiam has described the final phase of preparation as intensive work over the past three months on adapting traditional wrestling strengths to beach wrestling rules. United World Wrestling says seven champions from the 2026 U17 World Championships are expected to compete in Dakar, including Iran's Amirsaleh Javidaniyeganeh, pictured in the governing body's entries article as a U17 world champion. Other names to note in the entries include Vietnam's Thi Hong Lo in the women's 45 kg class and Greece's Vasiliki Karavanou, whom Hruby beat in the Baku world final at 75 kg, according to USA Wrestling's account of that tournament — though in Dakar, every group-stage draw starts from zero.

## Why the sand changes everything

Beach wrestling rewards a different skill set from the mat game, and that is part of its appeal as a Youth Olympic debut. Bouts are fought entirely on the feet, with no ground wrestling, and points come when an opponent is forced to touch the sand with a knee or upper body, or is pushed out of the circle. Hruby has described the discipline in simple terms: there is no top and bottom, no mat returns and no scrambles on the ground, and dropping to a knee hands over a point. That makes upper-body control, balance and explosive first exchanges especially valuable, and it makes the format easy for a new audience to follow: a bout can turn on a single slip, a single push, or a single moment of lost balance. For young wrestlers still building their senior careers, Dakar is therefore both a medal opportunity and a showcase — a chance to introduce a fast, outdoor discipline to viewers who may never have watched wrestling on sand before.

## What to watch for

The storylines are already clear. Can Hruby convert her Baku world title into Youth Olympic gold? Can Fry and Apostol build on their Carolina Beach breakthroughs? Can the host nation's wrestlers turn sand into an advantage, and can Georgia's Mdzevashvili and Makharadze make their mark on successive days? The answers will come — each class is decided within a day — and by Sunday evening, beach wrestling will have its Youth Olympic champions.
