> Antonelli can seal the title in Texas, but Wolff and Lord insist the 20-year-old's 'match point' is a one-in-25 long shot.

## TL;DR
- Kimi Antonelli leads George Russell by 102 points heading into the US Grand Prix in Austin on October 25.
- A win in Texas would be his first mathematical chance to clinch the 2026 world championship.
- Mercedes deputy boss Bradley Lord puts the chances at 'one in 25' and wants the team focused on set-up.
- Toto Wolff is keeping a 'race by race' approach and expects the title to be decided in Mexico, Brazil or later.
- Both W17s will run the latest aero package and new front wing in Austin as Antonelli chases the set-up sweet spot.

## Key points
- 2026 US Grand Prix, Circuit of The Americas, Austin, Texas, 23-25 October 2026 — round 18
- Standings: Kimi Antonelli 340, George Russell 238, Lewis Hamilton 229; 150 points remain over 6 races
- Antonelli seals the title in Austin if he wins while Russell finishes 9th or worse and Hamilton 5th or worse
- A win would also put Antonelli on the brink of becoming the youngest F1 world champion, eclipsing Sebastian Vettel by the better part of three years
- Antonelli: 8 Grand Prix wins this season; five-race winning streak from China; last win in Madrid
- Bradley Lord: 'a one in 25 chance' of clinching in Austin (Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show)
- Toto Wolff: championship could be decided in Mexico, Brazil 'or further down the line'; 'race by race' approach
- Mercedes to run latest W17 aero specification with new front wing on both cars in Austin
- Constructors' standings: Mercedes lead Ferrari by 134 points, with Ferrari and Red Bull closing
- FOM has Imola on standby as an 'over-ready' replacement if the Middle East situation escalates; a shorter calendar could make an Austin win unassailable

## A first "match point" in Texas

Formula 1 arrives in Austin this week for the United States Grand Prix, round 18 of the 2026 season, and Kimi Antonelli carries something no one inside the Mercedes garage will say out loud: his first mathematical chance to be crowned world champion.

The 20-year-old Italian leads team-mate George Russell by 102 points with six races remaining, and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton sits nine points further back. If Antonelli wins at the Circuit of The Americas on October 25, his tally rises to 365 points — and the title race could be over with five rounds still to run. Victory would also put him on the brink of becoming the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, eclipsing Sebastian Vettel by the better part of three years.

It is, in tennis terms, a first match point. Inside Mercedes, though, nobody is reaching for the champagne. "I think there's something like a one in 25 chance of that being remotely possible in Austin," deputy team principal Bradley Lord said on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show. "The focus is how can we get the car in its sweet spot and then go and score as many points as possible."

## The exact math

The conditions for a coronation in Texas are precise. Antonelli must win the race while Russell finishes no better than ninth and Hamilton no better than fifth. In that case Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris would all be mathematically eliminated too.

It is a scenario the team privately concedes is remote. Team principal Toto Wolff was blunt: "I haven't looked at it from that perspective. Mathematically also I haven't looked at the points, but it probably needs the other two, George and Lewis, to retire and him winning. This is not a likely scenario, but the aim must be to score points, not to lose too many on the others. Whether that's in Mexico or Brazil, or further down the line, we shall see."

Wolff did acknowledge the statistical reality: "If you look at the numbers and ask AI, 'What is the chance that he will win?', then it is probably almost 100 percent, but it remains motorsport. You can have bad luck, you can have accidents, and then the pressure can start to mount. So I think we have to take it race by race."

## The machine beneath him

Antonelli's composure has been the story of 2026. After an at-times wobbly rookie campaign, he has cut a far more mature figure this season, kick-starting his title bid with five straight victories from China and adding three more since. His last win came in Madrid, while measured drives in Azerbaijan, Bahrain and Singapore extended his advantage without unnecessary risk.

Yet the car underneath him has been a puzzle. Mercedes introduced a far-reaching upgrade package for the W17 at the Bahrain Grand Prix but struggled to extract the expected performance. The team responded with an A/B test in Singapore: Russell reverted to the previous specification — the same package that carried him to victory in Baku — while Antonelli persevered with the updated car.

Antonelli has asked the team to keep an open mind on set-up direction as Austin approaches, with three practice sessions on Friday offering room to experiment. "The window is very small at the moment where the car operates and is very sensitive to the way you drive it, the way you take a corner, the way you brake," the eight-time grand prix winner told media including RacingNews365. "So hopefully now — in Austin, we have three free practices — we can be very open-minded with set-up, and hopefully we can find a way, and we can use the full potential of the package and finally see the gains."

Lord confirmed both cars will run the latest aerodynamic specification in Austin, including the new front wing, as the team chases the set-up sweet spot that has so far proved elusive.

## No room for coasting

While the drivers' title dominates the narrative, the constructors' fight is far from settled. Mercedes hold a 134-point lead over Ferrari, but both Ferrari and Red Bull have chipped away at it in recent rounds. "We have a solid lead, but nothing is decided or guaranteed. We must focus on bringing both cars home in the highest positions possible," Lord said.

Wolff's prescription for keeping his young driver grounded is simplicity itself: "When you come to the next race, you do the pre-race work. You put the car on the ground on a Friday, you develop it from session to session and optimise it, and eventually hope that your qualifying goes well, and then you concentrate on race day, not spending too much time on thinking about a championship. So this is, for me, the best way in order to win a championship."

## A wildcard on the horizon

One twist could reshape the run-in: Formula One Management is understood to have Imola on standby as an "over-ready" replacement for the Qatar and Abu Dhabi finales should the situation in the Middle East escalate. A shorter calendar would mean fewer available points — and in that scenario, an Austin victory could leave Antonelli unassailable regardless of where his rivals finish.

For now, the message from Brackley is unanimous: forget the match point, find the set-up, score the points. The championship will come when it comes — most likely in Mexico, Brazil, or beyond. Austin, for all its noise, is just another race. Probably.
