> In a fight-week interview published on October 24, No. 2 heavyweight Alexander Volkov questioned whether Ciryl Gane's title — gained after Tom Aspinall's vacancy and defended next against Josh Hokit at UFC 334 — still identifies the division's best fighter.

## TL;DR
- Volkov asked what Gane's heavyweight belt really means right now.
- Gane became undisputed champion after Aspinall vacated the title.
- Gane defends against Josh Hokit at UFC 334 on November 14.
- Volkov says title shots now reward fame as much as dominance.
- Volkov fights Rizvan Kuniev at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on October 24.

## Key points
- Alexander Volkov, ranked No. 2 at heavyweight, questioned the meaning of Ciryl Gane's title in an MMA Fighting interview published October 24, 2026.
- Gane won the interim title by stopping Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, then became undisputed champion when Tom Aspinall vacated on September 14, 2026.
- Gane defends the undisputed title against undefeated Josh Hokit at UFC 334 on November 14 at Madison Square Garden.
- Volkov has won six of his last seven fights; his only defeat in that run was a split decision to Gane at UFC 310.
- Volkov faces Rizvan Kuniev on the UFC 333 main card in Abu Dhabi on October 24, with no title attached.

Alexander Volkov did not need a title fight to start an argument about the heavyweight championship. He needed only a microphone, a fight-week interview, and a blunt question.

“Is Ciryl Gane a real champion right now? He is real if he has a belt,” Volkov told MMA Fighting in an interview published on October 24. “But what means his belt right now? This is the question. Maybe it loses the meaning all fans want it to have.”

Volkov’s frustration is easy to understand, even for fans who disagree with his conclusion. He is ranked No. 2 in the UFC heavyweight division. He has won six of his last seven fights. The only defeat in that run was a split decision to Gane himself, at UFC 310 on December 7, 2024, with scores of 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28. Since then, Volkov has kept winning while the title picture has repeatedly passed him by.

Gane is set to defend the undisputed heavyweight title against Josh Hokit at UFC 334 on November 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York. That booking is the immediate trigger for Volkov’s criticism, and the route to it is worth setting out before judging whether his complaint is fair.

Gane first acquired the interim championship by stopping Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. The fight ended through strikes at 1:27 of the second round. It was Pereira’s heavyweight debut after championship runs at middleweight and light heavyweight, not a defence of an existing heavyweight belt. At that stage, Tom Aspinall still held the undisputed championship.

Aspinall’s reign then ended without another fight. He had sustained an eye injury against Gane at UFC 321, a bout that ended in a no contest, and the UFC later said he had reinjured his right eye while training for an expected rematch. On September 14, 2026, Aspinall vacated the title rather than continue holding up the division. That vacancy changed Gane’s designation from interim to undisputed champion without another fight between the two men.

Hokit is a remarkable story on his own terms. He has won four UFC fights since appearing on Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2025. His most recent win came against Derrick Lewis on the same White House card as Gane’s win over Pereira. He enters the title fight undefeated at 10-0, and the Gane bout will be only his eleventh professional fight. The promotion has also cited four performance bonuses for Hokit, including both Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night honours for his bout against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 327.

That speed is precisely what troubles Volkov. He contrasted a championship earned through sustained dominance with title shots that, in his view, now go to fighters for being famous.

“But now we can get fights, title shots for just being more famous, and doesn’t matter how you became famous,” Volkov said. “It doesn’t matter what you do, and you took the fight just because most people know you and they want you to be beaten or win the fight.”

He went further when describing what he believes the belt represents under Gane. “The belt has the meaning of the fighter who has it right now,” Volkov said. “So the meaning of the belt is like that, a champion who can eye poke somebody in a fight, kick a groin or do something else, and then knock out guys and become a champion because he hurt another champion before.”

He applied the same logic to Hokit. “Then he will fight with a guy who is just very loud right now, kind of showman,” Volkov said. “If he would take this belt, the meaning of the belt is that now you should be a showman to get the belt.”

Volkov then offered his own counter-vision. “But one day it will be about a fighter who just can beat everybody, not speak a lot, do it like there’s no cheating or something like that, and be just a martial artist,” he said. “This belt will have this meaning. If I will have the belt, the belt will have meaning.”

There is self-interest in that argument, and Volkov does not hide it. At a UFC 333 press conference he asked directly about his own route to a championship fight, and in the new interview he put his claim plainly: “Who can be closer to the title than me, who is No. 2 in ranking?” He has also reported signing a new multi-fight deal with the UFC, removing one obvious obstacle to a future title opportunity if he keeps winning.

His immediate assignment is a reminder that rankings alone guarantee nothing. Volkov meets Rizvan Kuniev on the UFC 333 main card in Abu Dhabi on October 24, with the UFC’s event listing pairing the No. 2 and No. 7 heavyweights. No title is attached to their contest. Rather than promising a knockout, Volkov has described adapting to his opponent and seeking effective offence.

That is the test embedded in his criticism. If Volkov beats Kuniev impressively, his sporting case becomes harder to ignore, even if UFC matchmaking remains driven by more than rankings. If he loses, the debate about Gane and Hokit will continue without him, and his claim will sound like frustration rather than fact.

For now, the division has two parallel stories. One is official: Gane defends against Hokit in New York on November 14. The other is Volkov's challenge to what that belt should mean. Until Volkov gets his own title fight, or Hokit proves a rapid rise can survive five championship rounds, that question will stay open.
