Carlos Alcaraz reached his first Rolex Paris Masters final on Saturday, 7 November, with a controlled 6-4, 6-4 victory over Casper Ruud on Court Central in Paris, and he will meet Ben Shelton in Sunday's championship match after the American ended the remarkable run of French favourite Luca Van Assche.

The two semi-finals told very different stories. Alcaraz, the second seed, needed one hour and 27 minutes and never faced a break point, while Shelton, the third seed, needed two hours and 16 minutes and a deciding-set recovery to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Together they set up a final between the second and third seeds, and a rematch of their late-night US Open quarter-final earlier this season.

## A controlled semi-final

Alcaraz started his first Paris semi-final with few unforced errors before growing sharper and more aggressive, and the pattern of both sets was set by a single break in each. At 3-3 in the opening set, he came through an 11-shot rally and broke Ruud to lead 4-3, then closed the set with an ace and a hold to love. In the second set he broke again to lead 5-4, after Ruud netted a forehand, and served out the match on his second match point with another ace.

The numbers underlined how complete the performance was. Alcaraz won 86 percent of his first-serve points, 31 of 36, converted two of five break-point chances, struck 27 winners and seven aces, and outpointed Ruud 69-51. Ruud, who had reached the semi-finals without dropping a set, countered with 14 winners but made 23 unforced errors, and he could not find a way into Alcaraz's service games at any stage of the match.

It was a very different kind of win from the one that had taken Alcaraz into the last four. On Friday he had saved two match points to beat Taylor Fritz 6-7(10), 7-5, 6-3 in the quarter-finals, a comeback that demanded nerve as much as tennis. Against Ruud, the 23-year-old Spaniard played with control from the first game, and the victory was his 41st of the season, taking a 41-5 win-loss record into the final.

## Shelton ends Van Assche's run

Shelton's path to the final was far less smooth, and for much of the afternoon the crowd at the Paris Masters had reason to believe in another upset. Van Assche, the 22-year-old Frenchman ranked world No. 47, took the only break of the first set to lead 6-5 and closed it 7-5, feeding off raucous support from his hometown crowd. Shelton, the US Open finalist, made 17 unforced errors in that opening set and looked short of rhythm.

The American changed the match by dragging Van Assche into longer rallies and forcing mistakes. He broke to lead 4-2 in the second set and held that advantage to level the match, then found himself in trouble again when Van Assche broke for a 3-1 lead in the decider. Shelton recovered the break, steadied his serve, and smiled when his 19th ace of the match made it 5-3 on his way to closing out a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory in two hours and 16 minutes.

The win took Shelton to the third ATP Masters 1000 final of his career and his sixth ATP Tour final of the 2026 season. Shelton had reached the semi-finals by beating Tommy Paul 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 under the roof of the Plenitude Arena on Friday. It also ended a breakthrough week for Van Assche, who was appearing in his first Masters semi-final after beating former world No. 5 Lorenzo Musetti and American 15th seed Learner Tien. His only career title came this year on outdoor clay at Estoril, and he leaves Paris having announced himself on the biggest indoor stage in the sport.

## A final with history

Sunday's final is a rematch with a recent edge. Alcaraz leads Shelton 3-1 in their head-to-head meetings, but he lost their last encounter in a late-night US Open quarter-final marathon that ended at 3:33 a.m., and he knows the American's serve and forehand can change a match in a handful of points. Alcaraz described facing Shelton as one of the best challenges in tennis, and the Paris final gives him an immediate chance to answer that US Open defeat.

The form of both men makes the rematch more than a revenge story. Alcaraz arrived in Paris six days after winning the title at the Vienna Open, and he has now reached the final at seven of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events on the calendar. This will be the 11th ATP Masters 1000 final of his career and his third final in his last four tournaments, after a season in which he has already won the Australian Open, Doha, Tokyo and Vienna.

## What Sunday will decide

For Shelton, the final is a chance to win a third Masters 1000 title and to confirm his rise to world No. 4 with the biggest win of his autumn. For Alcaraz, it is a chance to win a Paris title that has previously eluded him and to finish a demanding indoor stretch with another trophy. After a Saturday of control on one side of the draw and a comeback on the other, Sunday afternoon in Paris will decide which of those strengths matters most.
