Vienna produced a final nobody could have scripted at the start of the week, and it did so in a single dramatic Saturday. Carlos Alcaraz ended Daniil Medvedev's winning run to reach his first Vienna Open final, and hours later Alex de Minaur denied incoming world No. 1 Alexander Zverev in a deciding tie-break. On Sunday, Alcaraz and De Minaur will meet for the Erste Bank Open title, with a first Vienna crown, a first win in the head-to-head for the Australian, and a place at the season-ending ATP Finals all in play.

Alcaraz struck first, beating Medvedev 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in one hour and 36 minutes. This was a different match from Medvedev's quarter-final win over Adrian Mannarino, covered in the previous morning edition.

Medvedev arrived in Vienna in formidable form. He had won seven matches in a row, with titles at the Hangzhou Open and the Almaty Open in the previous five weeks, and he had reached at least the semi-finals in five consecutive tournaments. Alcaraz, the second seed, still found a way through without losing a set.

The opening set turned on a single lapse. Medvedev double-faulted to hand Alcaraz set point, and the Spaniard took the set 6-4. The second set was far tighter. Medvedev responded strongly, broke Alcaraz to force a tie-break, and for long stretches neither man could establish a decisive advantage. In the breaker, Alcaraz produced a barrage of powerful groundstrokes, winning it 7-2.

The victory extended Alcaraz's winning streak at ATP 500 events to 25 matches. It took him to the 37th tour-level final of his career and his fifth final of 2026, and it gave him a measure of revenge for March, when Medvedev handed him his first defeat of the season in the Indian Wells semi-finals. Alcaraz converted three of his four break points, according to TNT Sports.

"It is a great feeling, beating someone like Daniil on an indoor court, after the [run] he was having," Alcaraz said. "A lot of wins in a row, a lot of confidence and I was able to beat him, so it is special."

For Medvedev, defeat did not erase the week: his semi-final run confirmed his qualification for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, alongside Alcaraz.

## De Minaur spoils Zverev's celebration

If Alcaraz's win was controlled, De Minaur's was chaotic, exhausting and, in the end, brilliantly composed. The Australian fifth seed beat top seed Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in about two and a half hours, reaching his first Vienna final and becoming, according to Tennis TourTalk, the first Australian finalist in the tournament's history.

The context made the upset larger. Zverev had confirmed on Thursday that he would replace the injured Jannik Sinner at the top of the rankings on Monday, becoming the 30th different player to lead the ATP rankings and, at 29, the oldest first-time world No. 1 since 1974.

De Minaur took the first set 6-4 after Zverev struggled to find his service rhythm. Zverev faced eight break points in the set and saved seven, but the one exception was enough, and he could not find a break back. The second set swung violently the other way, with Zverev racing to a 4-0 lead and romping through it 6-1, leaving De Minaur rattled.

The decider produced no service breaks at all. Instead it built to a tie-break in which De Minaur surged to an early 3-0 lead, then held his nerve when Zverev fought back. Zverev went 6-2 down in the breaker, saved two match points, and was finally beaten on De Minaur's third match point.

"Super proud with how I handled the situation," De Minaur said, via the BBC. "I played on my terms. I was going to go out swinging and playing the right type of tennis, and that is what made the difference today."

It was his third win in four matches against Zverev, who has not beaten De Minaur indoors since 2021, and it took the Australian to 10-0 indoors in 2026 and the 23rd tour-level final of his career.

## What Sunday now means

The final is rich with history and consequence. Alcaraz leads De Minaur 6-0 in their head-to-head, and Sunday will be their seventh meeting and their third in a championship match, after Queen's in 2023 and Rotterdam in 2025. De Minaur therefore needs a first win over Alcaraz to lift the trophy, and it would be his first ATP Tour title since February, when he won in Rotterdam.

The Turin race gives the final another layer. By reaching the Vienna final, De Minaur moved ahead of Spain's Rafael Jodar into the final qualifying position in the Race to Turin, and a title on Sunday would strengthen his case further.

For Alcaraz, the prize is simpler: a first Vienna title and a fourth title of an injury-hit 2026 season. Zverev's defeat does not change Monday's coronation, but it denies him a winning start to life as world No. 1 in waiting.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Jiri Lehecka came from a set down to beat Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in Basel and reach the Swiss Indoors final, where he will face Valentin Vacherot, who beat Taylor Fritz 7-6 (5), 6-3. That final, like Vienna's, will be played on Sunday.

Vienna's final, though, is the headline: Alcaraz, the tournament's most reliable closer, against De Minaur, fresh from one of the biggest wins of his career.
