Rio Ngumoha's Record-Breaking Treble of Assists Fires Liverpool to 4-3 Comeback Win Over Villarreal
Liverpool's 18-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha set up all three comeback goals as the Reds rallied from 2-0 down to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield, becoming the youngest player in club history to assist in European competition.

Ngumoha the Star as Liverpool Rally From Two Down to Edge Villarreal in Seven-Goal UCL Thriller
Anfield had seen this movie before — the roar, the impossible comeback — but rarely had it been written by an 18-year-old. Liverpool's perfect Champions League start looked in ruins on Tuesday night as Villarreal raced into a two-goal lead inside half an hour, capitalising on uncharacteristic errors from Virgil van Dijk and a disjointed home press. It took a teenager to rewrite the script.

Rio Ngumoha produced the finest performance of his fledgling senior career, setting up three goals as Liverpool fought back to beat Villarreal 4-3. The 18-year-old winger was named Player of the Match and earned a standing ovation when he was withdrawn in the 73rd minute. By then, he had already carved his name into the club's history: at 18 years and 52 days, Ngumoha became the youngest player in Liverpool's history to provide an assist in European competition, surpassing the mark set by Michael Owen, who was 18 years and 324 days old when he set up a goal against Valencia in November 1998, per Opta statistician Michael Reid.
The night had begun in nightmare fashion for the Reds. Van Dijk made a serious blunder trying to clear his lines and played in Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze, who rolled the ball into the far corner to stun the home crowd. With Liverpool's high press easily bypassed — Ryan Gravenberch operating as a shadow striker in the ten and the two midfielders pushing so high they resembled second strikers — Villarreal found space everywhere. Just before the half-hour mark, van Dijk pushed up again and the gap behind him was exploited by Sergi Cardona, who raced through to double the visitors' lead.
Anfield fell silent. The Yellow Submarine's travelling fans, meanwhile, were in pandemonium.

Liverpool needed a response before half-time, and it was Ngumoha who provided it. First, Alexis Mac Allister pulled one back in the 36th minute, and then, with the half ticking into stoppage time and the teams still separated by a single goal, Ngumoha got down the left flank and clipped a teasing ball to the far post. There, loanee defender Ronald Araújo — who had been moved from right-back into an inverted full-back role to plug the gaps in midfield — threw himself at the delivery and thumped it home to make it 2-2. The Kop found its voice.
The second half belonged to Liverpool's teenager. Twenty minutes in, Ngumoha ran rings around his marker on the left before cutting the ball back perfectly for Mac Allister, who rifled it into the roof of the net to complete the turnaround and his brace. When Florian Wirtz — on for Araújo at the break — drilled home a fourth from Cody Gakpo's pass, the points looked safe. A late, unmarked tap-in from Tani Oluwaseyi at the far post gave the scoreline a flattering gloss for Villarreal, but Liverpool held on to complete their third win from three in the competition.
All three of Ngumoha's assists told the same story: fearless one-on-one dribbling, a low centre of gravity, and the end product to match the trickery. "Whenever I get the ball and there's an opportunity to go one-v-one or two-v-one sometimes, by all means I'll do it," he told Amazon Prime afterwards. "I believe in myself to do it."
His team-mates were unanimous. "Rio was amazing tonight, he made the difference," said Mac Allister, whose own double had done so much to fuel the comeback. "He was really important and I'm glad for him. The quality he has is clear, everyone knows. He worked really hard off the ball."
Head coach Andoni Iraola, who has been carefully managing the teenager's development this season, praised his growing maturity. "I'm really happy with Rio," Iraola said. "He's trying to improve everything that we try to correct. He is playing a lot more on the right and he has adapted well. He's becoming a more complete player. He's still only 18."
For his own part, Ngumoha was determined to put the team's achievement ahead of the personal milestone. "We have the best fans in the world and to hear my name chanted is a dream," he said. "It's up there with one of the best I've played, I think. I enjoyed myself out there. These records are amazing to break but the assist so we win is the most important thing."
The performance was the latest chapter in one of the most exciting breakthroughs in English football. Ngumoha first announced himself last season, making his senior Liverpool debut against Newcastle United shortly before his 17th birthday and scoring a dramatic late winner in a 3-2 victory to become Liverpool's youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer. He has since become a fixture in Iraola's European plans, and this — a treble of assists on a Champions League night against elite opposition — felt like a coming of age.
The result keeps Liverpool alongside Paris Saint-Germain at the summit of the league phase with nine points from nine. The Reds are back at Anfield on domestic duty next against an in-form Brighton side who have not lost a game since August, while in Europe they must wait two weeks for a testing away trip to Fenerbahçe, where they will look to keep pace with the defending champions at the top of the table.
Villarreal, for all their first-half brilliance, left Merseyside with nothing — punished, like so many before them, by the one thing Anfield has always promised: that the night is never over until it is over. This time, it was an 18-year-old who made sure of it.
