Brighton's Diego Gomez Scores From 51 Metres as Seagulls Demolish Crystal Palace 5-0
Diego Gomez produced the longest-range Premier League goal in nearly nine years as Brighton demolished rivals Crystal Palace 5-0 in the M23 derby, reaching 23 goals in seven games and strengthening their surprise place among the title chasers.

A Derby Decided in Ten Devastating Minutes

The M23 derby was effectively over before Crystal Palace had time to settle. Brighton & Hove Albion stormed into a 3-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes at the American Express Community Stadium on Sunday and never looked back, running out 5-0 winners in a performance that underlined their credentials as this season's great entertainers.
Palace fell behind in the fourth minute when defender Jaydee Canvot turned Pascal Gross's set-piece into his own net. Three minutes later came the moment of the season so far. Collecting possession from Olivier Boscagli, Diego Gomez spotted goalkeeper Walter Benitez off his line and unleashed a breathtaking shot from 51 metres out, the ball sailing over the backtracking Benitez and into the net from the centre circle.
Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 in the tenth minute, finishing a move that Charalampos Kostoulas had started with a clever back-heel, and from that point the contest was a procession.
The Longest-Range Strike in Nearly Nine Years

Gomez's audacious effort was, according to data firm Opta, the longest-range goal scored in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney found the net from 58 metres for Everton against West Ham United in November 2017, almost nine years ago. It evoked memories of David Beckham's famous halfway-line strike for Manchester United three decades ago.
"When I got the ball I knew the goalkeeper was a little bit ahead. When I scored, I didn't know where to run or what to do. I was very happy with the goal," Gomez told Sky Sports afterwards. "It's about the brotherhood and the intensity. We keep doing this in training and games."
Former goalkeeper and BBC pundit Shay Given refused to blame Benitez for being caught out of position. "We're always talking about sweeper goalkeepers and you've got to be high up for the through ball and the defence playing a high line. I think his position was fine," Given said. "You've just got to take your hat off to Gomez. That is just a brilliant, brilliant goal."
The strike is already being talked about as an instant goal-of-the-season contender. Palace captain Adam Wharton gave the ball away just inside Brighton's half in the build-up, and from the moment Gomez shaped to shoot, the Amex crowd knew it had witnessed something special. Three goals in ten minutes, and one of the great Premier League strikes.
Statement Win for the Season's Great Entertainers
The numbers behind Brighton's start are remarkable. The Seagulls moved to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with 23 goals from their first seven games. Only three sides in the competition's history, Arsenal in 2009-10, Manchester United in 2011-12 and Manchester City in 2019-20, have ever scored more at this stage of a season.
The victory moved Brighton provisionally into the top three with 16 points, five behind leaders Manchester City, keeping them firmly in the title conversation after a campaign that has already seen them overwhelm champions Arsenal 3-0.
Kostoulas added the fourth early in the second half, pouncing after Ayari's shot was blocked, while substitute Jack Hinshelwood completed the scoring in the 84th minute, reacting quickest after Benitez kept out Luka Vuskovic's header. It was Brighton's biggest win over their fiercest rivals since 1956.
Pressure Piles Up on Palace Boss Pierre Sage
For Crystal Palace and manager Pierre Sage, it was the worst possible result in the worst possible fixture. The Frenchman, already under scrutiny with just two wins from seven league matches, apologised to the travelling supporters after the final whistle and admitted he did not know whether he would be given time to turn things around.
Palace did create moments of their own, Jean-Philippe Mateta struck the crossbar and Jefferson Lerma hit the post, but they were ruthlessly punished for every defensive lapse against a side that has made converting chances into an art form this season.
What Comes Next
Brighton's flying start shows no sign of slowing, and the challenge for the chasing pack is to find a way to contain an attack that is scoring at a rate that stands comparison with some of the great sides of the Premier League era. For Palace, the international pause cannot come soon enough, and for Sage, the next fortnight may determine whether he is the man given the chance to lead the response.
