Bayern 2-2 Arsenal: Saka injury mars a Champions League classic as Rice rescues late point in Munich
Bukayo Saka limped off after 10 minutes with a quadriceps injury that Mikel Arteta says "doesn't look good at all", but Arsenal fought back twice — through Eberechi Eze and a late Declan Rice strike — to draw 2-2 with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

On a night that had almost everything — a 10-minute injury scare, a VAR-reversed opener, a Kane penalty and an 82nd-minute equaliser — Bayern Munich and Arsenal could not be separated. The 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday closed Champions League Matchday 3 with a contest that felt like a trailer for next spring's knockout rounds, and it left Mikel Arteta with a point, pride in his side's resilience, and an anxious wait on Bukayo Saka's fitness.
Ten minutes and done: Saka's night ends early
The evening's defining image arrived almost immediately. With just 10 minutes gone and the game still goalless, Saka fell to the turf clutching his left thigh moments after playing a pass. There was no challenge involved; the winger grabbed his thigh just above the knee, received treatment on the pitch, and limped down the tunnel with Eberechi Eze taking his place.
Arteta confirmed afterwards that the injury was to the quadriceps rather than the hamstring that has troubled Saka in the past, but he offered little comfort. "It's his quad," he said. "When a player has to come off with sharp pain it is never good news. We have to wait and see. He doesn't look good at all." Gary Jacob of The Times later reported Saka was seen leaving the stadium on crutches, and Arsenal are now awaiting a further assessment before they know how long the 25-year-old will be sidelined.
The timing could hardly be worse. Saka had started all seven of Arsenal's domestic games this season, scoring three times with the Gunners winning six of them, and he remains the team's defining attacking presence. With Christos Tzolis already out with a hamstring injury picked up on international duty — and Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli having left the club this season — Arteta's wide options are thinning precisely as the schedule tightens.
Arteta also used the moment to widen the lens on the demands of elite European football, pointing to the ferocious intensity of Tuesday night's Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 win over Barcelona as part of the same picture. "The level of intensity that this game requires is something incredible," he said. "This is man-to-man for 96 minutes in every action. There's no breathing. The stress, the quality, the intensity, the level that you need is unbelievable. It's the highest level. And those things happen, unfortunately."

Eze answers, Kane punishes, Rice rescues
Remarkably, Arsenal's night improved the moment Saka departed. Eze, who had been yanked at half-time in the weekend's Premier League action, was suddenly bright and busy — and in the 26th minute he beat the last man with a perfectly timed run, carried down the left flank and beat Manuel Neuer. The offside flag went up, but the review showed Eze was onside, and the Gunners led 1-0.
Bayern's response was swift and distinctly Kane-flavoured. The England captain collected the ball at midfield and sent a perfect ball behind Jurrien Timber for Alphonso Davies, who drove into the box and belted his shot past David Raya to make it 1-1 after 35 minutes. Just before the interval, Raya had to be strong to keep out Dayot Upamecano's towering header from a Serge Gnabry cross.
The hour mark belonged to Kane entirely. Konrad Laimer burst down the right flank and cut the ball back toward the spot; Kane's shot for the empty goal struck the arm of the sliding Timber, and the penalty was given. Kane's stuttering run-up ended with the ball in the roof of the net — his 73rd Champions League goal, moving him to within 17 of fourth place on the competition's all-time scoring list, held by Karim Benzema. Bayern 2-1, and Arsenal's 14-match winning run in the Champions League league phase was under serious threat.
Arteta turned to Viktor Gyokeres, and the substitute produced the decisive touch of the night without scoring. With eight minutes remaining, the Swede flicked the ball on with Jonathan Tah all over his back, and Declan Rice — the other England star on the pitch — beat Neuer between the right glove and his legs to make it 2-2. The Arsenal bench erupted; a defeat in Munich would have been a statement of a different kind.

What the draw means
For Bayern, there is frustration at having led and not finished the job, but the point keeps them firmly in the qualification picture. Kane, again, was the complete forward — playmaker for Davies' equaliser, executioner from the spot.
For Arsenal, the arithmetic is seven points from three games, the league-phase winning run over but the unbeaten start intact. The defending Premier League champions — currently second behind Manchester City domestically — showed they can go toe-to-toe with Europe's heavyweights even after losing their talisman inside 10 minutes. Eze's instant impact and Rice's clutch finish were the clearest possible evidence of squad depth.
Yet the Saka question now shadows everything else. If the quadriceps injury keeps him out for weeks, Arsenal face a defining stretch without the player their system is built around. The wait for the scan results begins.
