A late twist at Scotstoun

Glasgow Warriors are top of the United Rugby Championship log, but only after a Friday night at Scotstoun Stadium that swung twice and was still in doubt with ten minutes left. The Warriors beat the Lions 29-20 on 30 October 2026, scoring a converted try in the 76th minute and adding a stoppage-time penalty to deny the visitors even a losing bonus point.

It was a bonus-point win for Glasgow, and a cruel finish for a Lions side that had fought back from 19-3 down at half-time to lead 20-19. For much of the second half, the Johannesburg team looked like completing one of the comebacks of the season. Instead, they left Scotland empty-handed at the end of a difficult and emotional European tour, while Glasgow headed into the November break at the summit.

How Glasgow built the lead

Glasgow struck first in the ninth minute, when winger Fergus Watson shrugged off attempted tackles from Lions flyhalf Chris Smith and centre Henco van Wyk to score. Scrumhalf George Horne added the conversion, and the Lions replied with a penalty from Chris Smith, but the hosts kept creating the better chances.

Glasgow extended their lead in the 30th minute, when flyhalf Dan Lancaster crossed for their second converted try.

The Lions' task then became harder when lock Etienne Oosthuizen was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle. Glasgow capitalised on their numerical advantage, with hooker Jack Singleton scoring their third try on his debut. Horne missed the conversion, but the Warriors still went into the break with a 16-point cushion.

Glasgow did so despite missing 11 players to Scotland duty, including Sione Tuipulotu and Kyle Steyn, ahead of the autumn campaign.

The Lions' second-half surge

The visitors needed a strong response, and they produced one. Scrumhalf Morné van den Berg crossed for a try in the 49th minute, with replacement flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain adding the conversion, and suddenly the Lions looked more assured with ball in hand.

They began to put the hosts under pressure, although crucial errors at key moments still prevented them from turning all of their possession into points. The pressure eventually told. Flank Siba Mahashe crossed after intercepting a pass, and although the conversion was missed, the gap was down to four points.

Then came the moment that turned the match on its head. Replacement hooker Morné Brandon scored from a lineout maul in the 70th minute, putting the Lions 20-19 ahead with nine minutes remaining. It was their first lead of the night, built on the set piece and on persistence rather than a single moment of brilliance.

They had won their opening two home games, but this was already their third consecutive away defeat in the competition.

The finish that changed everything

Glasgow did not panic. Captain Stafford McDowall held his pass and sent fullback Ollie Smith over for the fourth try, the bonus point and, after Horne's conversion, a 26-20 lead. It was the decisive score, coming just as the Lions had begun to believe that their comeback would be completed.

There was still one more twist. With the clock in the red, Horne kicked a penalty after a Lions infringement at a lineout late in the match. That stretched the margin to nine points, which meant the Lions lost the losing bonus point they would have earned by finishing within seven points.

The late penalty mattered because a 26-20 defeat would still have given the Lions a losing bonus point.

Franco Smith praised the Lions afterwards, telling Premier Sports: "I expected it to be a fight from the start." He added that he was not surprised by their effort after a disappointing and emotional trip. He was also honest about the passage that let the visitors back in, saying Glasgow had given away a sequence of penalties and then failed to stop the maul well enough. "We should have stopped it better because that led to the try in the end," he said. "That's work for us, so that we don't give away maul tries."

What it means and what comes next

For Glasgow, the win took Franco Smith's side to the top of the URC log before the conclusion of the weekend's round-five action, and extended their unbeaten run to six games. That is a strong position from which to enter the break, even if the second half will give the coaches plenty to work on.

For the Lions, the defeat extends a painful away pattern. SuperSport reported that their winless record outside South Africa has now grown to 19 games, with 17 losses and two draws, and that they have not won away from home since 2024. That context makes the fightback both encouraging and frustrating: they showed they can compete with the log leaders on the road, but they still could not close out a winning position.

The URC now pauses for November due to the Nations Championship. When it returns, Glasgow are scheduled to host Benetton at Scotstoun on 5 December, while the Lions are scheduled to host the Bulls at Ellis Park on 5 December.

Glasgow Warriors 29 (19): Tries: Fergus Watson, Dan Lancaster, Jack Singleton, Ollie Smith. Conversions: George Horne (3). Penalty: Horne. Lions 20 (3): Tries: Morné van den Berg, Siba Mahashe, Morné Brandon. Conversion: Boeta Chamberlain. Penalty: Chris Smith.
