A final turned on its head

CHRISTCHURCH — Canterbury are Hilux NPC champions again, and this time they had to do it the hard way. Trailing Northland 21-10 at half-time in Monday afternoon's final at One NZ Stadium, the defending champions scored five tries in the second half — and 33 points to Northland's three — to win 43-24 in front of a sold-out crowd and claim their 16th NPC title.

It was a comeback built on a maul that would not be stopped, a bench that changed the game, and a refusal to panic. Northland, in their first NPC final, led for most of the afternoon and looked capable of a great upset. Instead, Canterbury delivered back-to-back titles, a year after ending a seven-year drought, moving to within one of Auckland's record haul of 17.

The turning point was clear: Northland halfback Sam Nock, outstanding in the first half, was yellow-carded in the 49th minute for failing to roll away. Canterbury kicked to the corner, drove, and scored. They never trailed again.

Northland's dream first half

Canterbury struck first, as they had so often this season, when No. 8 Dom Gardiner crashed over from close range in the sixth minute. But the visitors were not overawed by the occasion or the 32-degree heat under the roof, which forced drinks breaks midway through each half.

The match swung when Canterbury first-five Andrew Knewstubb was yellow-carded in the 11th minute for a head-on-head hit on Rush. Northland used the extra man ruthlessly. Fullback Jordan Trainor's grubber was perfect for winger Heremaia Murray to collect and score in the 15th minute, and Trainor powered over himself 10 minutes later after breaking Canterbury tacklers. Captain Brodie McAlister answered with a driving-maul try in the 30th minute, but Northland had the last word: Nock burst through a gap, linked with Corey Evans, and the centre scored under the posts in the 39th minute. Reihana converted all three Northland tries, and the Taniwha led 21-10 at the break, having enjoyed 58 percent of possession and 69 percent of territory.

"We were put under the pump in that first half. It's a quality Northland side," Canterbury midfielder Dallas McLeod told Sky Sport. "Down at half-time, we had good convos, we had full trust in the team and that we could pull ourselves out of it."

The yellow card that changed everything

If the first half belonged to Northland's enterprise, the second belonged to Canterbury's power. Gardiner, who finished with a game-high 17 carries, pressured Nock into a knock-on at the base of a ruck. Moments later Nock was in the sin bin, and Canterbury went straight to the weapon Northland feared most.

Replacement hooker George Bell, on early for McAlister, flopped over from the maul in the 50th minute. Five minutes later he was over again after a strong Jone Rova burst, and Canterbury led for the first time since the opening minutes. Chay Fihaki, who had taken over the goalkicking from Knewstubb, converted both, finishing with four conversions.

Reihana briefly hauled Northland level at 24-24 with a penalty from 40 metres. It did not stay level for long.

Bell and Hutchinson finish the job

Canterbury's third second-half try came after a 25-phase, three-minute assault, ended when Fihaki sent a long pass wide and replacement winger Isaac Hutchinson cut back inside and dived over in the 63rd minute. Canterbury led 31-24, and Northland began to fray.

The visitors still had chances inside Canterbury's 22, but twice threw them away. Then Hutchinson struck again in the 74th minute, finishing a 20-metre burst after Johnny McNicholl's line break and Gardiner's charge had broken Northland open.

There was still time for a final flourish. Replacement halfback Tyson Belworthy sniped from a scrum on halfway, beat Nathan Salmon in a foot race and dotted down in the 79th minute for a 50-metre stunner. Canterbury had scored 19 unanswered points in the final 18 minutes, and McAlister lifted the trophy.

Canterbury 43 (George Bell 2, Isaac Hutchinson 2, Dom Gardiner, Brodie McAlister, Tyson Belworthy tries; Chay Fihaki 4 conversions) beat Northland 24 (Heremaia Murray, Jordan Trainor, Corey Evans tries; Rivez Reihana 3 conversions, 1 penalty). Half-time: 21-10 to Northland.

A title, a Shield, and a season to remember

Canterbury against Northland in the NPC final at One NZ Stadium, Christchurch

For Canterbury, coached by Alex Robertson, this was a second consecutive title in a new home. Their run through the playoffs — a 62-26 quarter-final win over Waikato and a 38-28 semi-final victory over Taranaki — had marked them as the competition's team to beat.

For Northland, coached by Ryan Martin, the defeat should not obscure what this season meant. The Taniwha had stunned Canterbury 36-12 in Christchurch in round four to win the Ranfurly Shield for the first time since 1978, then defended it twice. They finished second, beat Tasman 26-21 and Otago 38-19 in the playoffs, and reached a first final. They were no passengers.

But finals are decided when pressure peaks, and after half-time Canterbury's bench proved decisive. Bell and Hutchinson, both replacements, scored two tries each, Fihaki's goalkicking steadied a side that had missed its first two attempts, and a forward pack second best for 40 minutes found a gear Northland could not match.

Northland leave Christchurch with a season to remember, and the knowledge they led by 11 points at half-time of a final. Canterbury leave with the trophy, a 16th title, and a team that now knows it can win a final even when everything goes wrong first.
