Two practices, two injuries, and a trade deadline suddenly rewritten. Washington lost the player who might have been its most valuable bargaining chip, Denver lost a running back it could ill afford to lose, and San Francisco — the one contender here that actually bought — was reported to be still shopping. The NFL trade deadline falls on November 10, and injuries on October 30 and 31 changed what two teams can plausibly do in the next ten days.

Payne's season ends in a Friday practice

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a season-ending Jones fracture in practice on Friday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The injury came late in a light practice, during a team drill, and was described as a fluke. Payne will be placed on injured reserve, and a typical recovery could take up to four months, according to medical experts cited in the report.

Payne had appeared as a late addition to Washington's injury report, listed as questionable after a limited practice. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo first reported a significant foot injury likely to land him on injured reserve. By Saturday, the picture had hardened: as Rapoport had put it, there was a possibility Payne had played his last down in 2026. That possibility is now the reality.

For Washington, the loss is layered. Payne, 29, is the Commanders' longest-tenured position player, a first-round pick in 2018 who signed a four-year extension in March 2023 and made the Pro Bowl in 2022. He had started all six games this season, with 14 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. He is also in the final year of his contract, with a base salary of $16.4 million, and his name had circulated as a plausible trade candidate. That market is gone: no contender trades for a defensive tackle who cannot play.

Touchdown Wire reported Washington already had 17 players on injured reserve before Payne, including Terry McLaurin, Jaylin Lane, Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Leo Chenal, while Jayden Daniels has missed time with a dislocated elbow. Washington, 1-4-1, will also be without starting defensive end Javon Kinlaw, out with a knee injury, for Sunday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving Charles Omenihu and Deatrich Wise Jr. as the experienced depth. Jer'Zhan Newton, who returned to practice this week after tearing a pectoral muscle on August 14, was ruled out on Saturday. Against a 2-5 Eagles team needing a win in the NFC East, Washington's interior will be tested from the first snap. Payne turns 30 in May and will head into free agency after a season cut short — a difficult decision now faces Washington over its longest-serving defender.

Denver loses Harvey for at least four games

Denver's blow was confirmed on Saturday, when the Broncos placed second-year running back RJ Harvey on injured reserve with a knee injury suffered in the early portion of Thursday's practice. Harvey had been limited on Thursday, did not practise on Friday and had already been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The move makes the absence longer: he must miss at least four games, five weeks including Denver's Week 10 bye, and will be eligible to return in Week 13, on December 6 against the Miami Dolphins.

That stretch covers the Chiefs, the Carolina Panthers in Week 9, the bye, the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 11 and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 12. It is a demanding run without a back whose value has increasingly come in the passing game. Harvey is Denver's top receiver out of the backfield this season, with 25 catches for 217 yards, plus 24 carries for 87 yards — 304 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns in all, at 6.2 yards per touch, according to the Broncos.

Harvey, a second-round pick in 2025, scored 12 touchdowns as a rookie. Now Jonah Coleman and J.K. Dobbins are expected to divide the workload, with Tyler Badie already on injured reserve, and Denver promoted safety Taylor Rapp from the practice squad in the corresponding move. Unlike Payne, Harvey is expected back this season — but a month without him is a serious test of Denver's depth.

San Francisco still shopping after Buckner

If Washington and Denver show how quickly injuries can close a deadline window, San Francisco shows how a buyer keeps one open. The 49ers, 6-1 and on their bye week, have already acquired defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts for a 2027 fourth-round pick, bringing back the player they drafted seventh overall in 2016. Yet according to The Athletic's Jonathan Jones, they may not be done: San Francisco is, in Jones's phrase, "still sniffing around for wide receiver help" ahead of November 10.

The need is easy to explain. Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson and De'Zhaun Stribling are on injured reserve, Deebo Samuel has missed two games with a hamstring injury, and Mike Evans missed last week's game against Atlanta with rib and Achilles ailments. Jones did not name targets; names linked to the trade block in wider reporting, including Brian Thomas Jr. and Josh Downs, are speculation, not San Francisco's shopping list. What is reported is the intent, with the 49ers' only game before the deadline coming on November 8 against Las Vegas.

That contrast is the story of this deadline week. Washington's most obvious trade chip is gone, Denver's backfield is thinner for a month, and the team that has already bought is still buying.
