The San Francisco 49ers are still perfect, and they have their defense to thank.

San Francisco held off the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday Night Football at Levi's Stadium, surviving a furious second-half comeback to move to 6-0. It was far closer than it had any right to be: the 49ers led 20-3 at halftime and 23-3 with 18 seconds left in the third quarter, then watched Washington roar back to within six points with the game coming down to the final snap.

The Commanders, who fell to 1-4-1, had 17 plays, two first downs and 90 yards of offense in the first half. They looked buried. Then Jayden Daniels happened — and the night turned into one of the season's great comebacks that almost was.

A tale of two halves

The opening 30 minutes were a clinic. The 49ers ran 41 plays for 303 yards while Washington managed almost nothing, and the scoreboard reflected it. Brock Purdy capped the opening drive with a touchdown pass to George Kittle after a nine-play, 64-yard march that took just 4:07 and made the outcome look inevitable.

A 54-yard reception by Mike Evans set up Christian McCaffrey's 1-yard touchdown plunge to make it 13-3, and the 49ers added another score before the break to lead 20-3. Evans, in his first season in San Francisco after 12 years in Tampa Bay, was questionable coming in with rib and Achilles injuries after barely practicing all week — but he walked down the Levi's Stadium red carpet before kickoff wearing a black Golden State Warriors jersey with Stephen Curry's No. 30, paying tribute to the Bay Area legend who is about to begin his 18th NBA season. Evans played like a man with something to prove, entering the night leading the 49ers in receiving with 24 catches for 326 yards and three touchdowns. It was a fitting salute on a night when the 49ers leaned on their stars early.

The second half belonged entirely to Washington. The Commanders outgained the 49ers 224 to 72 after halftime. Daniels threw two touchdown passes and the 49ers' offense vanished — three straight three-and-out drives gaining seven total yards gave Washington chance after chance.

The goal-line stand

The moment that nearly broke San Francisco came with 2:55 to play. Rookie Romello Height sacked Daniels on what looked like a drive-killing play, but Ashtyn Davis was flagged for illegal contact — one of four 49ers defensive penalties that handed Washington first downs on the night.

Daniels marched the Commanders to the San Francisco 17, and on fourth down he gave Treylon Burks a chance at a tying touchdown in the end zone. Burks had the ball briefly, but Malik Mustapha forced it out as the receiver hit the ground, and the 49ers escaped with 1:54 remaining.

The last gasp

San Francisco's offense couldn't kill the clock — a third straight three-and-out — and Washington got one more crack after a fair-catch interference call on 49ers gunner Siran Neal moved the ball 15 yards to the Commanders' 46 with 52 seconds left.

The drive reached the San Francisco 28 before Daniels was flagged for intentional grounding, and on the final snap Ogbo Okoronkwo and Height combined to sack the quarterback, ending the comeback. It was one of four sacks on the night for a 49ers defense that bent almost to breaking but never snapped. Four times the Commanders were given new life by San Francisco penalties, and four times the defense slammed the door again — a fitting final act for a unit that carried the team through an ugly second half.

What 6-0 means

The win keeps the 49ers rolling one week after a comeback victory at Seattle, and the resilience is becoming a theme: this team wins the shootouts and the rock fights alike. The offense remains potent when it finds rhythm — Purdy to Kittle looked automatic early — but the second-half disappearance will be a coaching point this week.

For Washington, it was another chapter in a season of near-misses. The Commanders tied the New York Giants last week — a game they could not have mismanaged worse down the stretch — and now add a Monday-night comeback that fell one play short. Daniels showed the talent that made him a star, dragging an outmatched roster back from the dead, but the hole Washington dug in the first half was simply too deep. At 1-4-1, the Commanders remain stuck in a dismal NFC East, while San Francisco's perfect start keeps it alone at the top of the NFC West.
