UFC 336 interim title row grows: Helwani blasts belt as Makhachev explains passing on Prates

A day after the UFC 336 interim title fight was announced, Ariel Helwani has called the belt unnecessary and Islam Makhachev has explained why he wants Prates vs Morales to decide the real contender.

This is a development, not a fresh announcement. The UFC 336 co-main event between Carlos Prates and Michael Morales for the interim welterweight title, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on 30 January, was announced on the evening of 26 October 2026. What is new over the past day is the reaction to it: a blunt intervention from veteran journalist Ariel Helwani, and an explanation from the champion himself, Islam Makhachev, about why he did not accept a proposed fight with Prates.

Helwani did not hold back. Writing on 26 October, he called the interim title total bullshit, arguing that Makhachev last fought in August and that a fight in January comes only five months later. What the hell are we doing, he asked, before contrasting the situation with light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg, who last fought in April, tore his ACL, and has had no interim title created in his division.

Helwani was careful to separate the fight from the belt. He said he absolutely loves Prates versus Morales, calling it a freaking amazing fight, and that he is happy the two men will receive the perks of a title fight. His objection is to the need for a second belt while Makhachev remains champion, and he suggested the UFC may have added the interim title to put pressure on Makhachev after the champion declined the January date. Helwani also noted that Makhachev had previously said he wanted to fight in December or January, and questioned the champion's change of course.

Makhachev himself addressed the situation in an interview with Pound4Padel, reported on 27 October, in which he explained why he chose not to accept a proposed fight with Prates. Prates and Morales will fight and determine who the real, worthy contender is, he said. They offered me a fight with Prates, who recently lost to the fighter, Ian Garry, that I beat. And if I had beaten him, Morales would already be waiting in line, he hasn't fought for a long time and is sitting around waiting for something. Let them fight, and we'll understand which of them is the real contender.

Makhachev's explanation

That framing matters because it answers the accusation that has followed the announcement. Prates has accused Makhachev of avoiding him and has vowed to knock out Morales on 30 January and then retire the champion. Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub went further, claiming the fight was pretty much cemented and signed, and criticising Makhachev for deciding against it. That claim of a signed bout is disputed: there has been no UFC confirmation of a signed bout, and Makhachev's own account is that he declined, or did not accept, a proposed fight, rather than withdrawing from a confirmed one.

The timing question is central to the whole row. Makhachev has said he wants to return only after Ramadan, which begins in February, and UFC chief executive Dana White has defended the interim title on the grounds that the division cannot wait. You can't hold up divisions like this, White said. You got to keep moving, and this fight makes sense. Makhachev has said he will face the winner once the interim champion is decided, which would set up a unification fight later in 2027.

Strip away the argument about belts and timelines, and the fight itself is the reason this story has caught fire. Prates, 24-7, is a dangerous finisher who has stopped former champions, while the unbeaten Morales, 19-0, has built his record on a different kind of menace. Helwani's verdict on the match-up was unambiguous: he loves the fight, and the only thing he objects to is the belt attached to it. On that point, at least, the champion, the challengers and the critics may agree more than the shouting suggests.

What happens next in Toronto

For context only, the UFC 336 announcement arrived during the UFC 333 broadcast, an event headlined by Alexander Volkanovski's second-round TKO win over Movsar Evloev, the second defence of his second featherweight reign. White has also left the door open to a Volkanovski move to lightweight against Justin Gaethje. That is background, not the story here: the story is what has happened since the UFC 336 announcement, and it will not be settled until Prates and Morales meet in Toronto.

What happens next is now clear in outline, even if the arguments are not. Prates and Morales will fight for the interim welterweight title in the UFC 336 co-main event on 30 January, and the winner will be positioned as the next challenger for Makhachev when the champion returns after Ramadan. Whether the interim belt was necessary, or whether it was, as Helwani put it, a solution in search of a problem, will be judged by how the division looks when the real champion finally returns.
