VCT 2027 Partnership Purge: Global Esports Leaves Competitive Scene as DRX Releases Ten

Riot Games named 32 partner teams across four regions for the 2027–2028 Valorant Champions Tour cycle — and Pacific's biggest casualties are two of its biggest names: Stage 2 champions Global Esports and Korean stalwart DRX.

Riot Games has formally locked in the 32 partner organisations for the 2027–2028 VALORANT Champions Tour cycle, and the first aftershocks are already reshaping professional Valorant. After a global evaluation that reviewed more than 100 applicants, Riot confirmed eight partners per region across the Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China — down from the 40 organisations of the previous cycle.

The Pacific allocation is where the news hits hardest. Crazy Raccoon, FULL SENSE, GAM Esports, Gen.G, Paper Rex, Rex Regum Qeon, T1 and ZETA DIVISION will carry the region into the new open-format era. Missing are two of Pacific's biggest 2026 names: Global Esports, the VCT Pacific Stage 2 champions, and KIWOOM DRX, one of the most storied brands in Valorant history. Both responded within hours of the reveal.

The champions Riot left behind

Global Esports' omission is the most startling verdict of the selection process. The organisation captured the VCT Pacific Stage 2 title in 2026 and qualified for Valorant Champions Shanghai, with Filipino players Xavier "xavi8k" Juan and Patrick "PatMen" Mendoza and assistant coach Derren "Aimix" dela Cruz central to the run.

It was not enough. Founder and CEO Rushindra Sinha announced that Global Esports will cease esports operations entirely and transition into GE Studios, a venture focused on content creation and AI-driven projects — a move he said had been planned for some time, with 2026 always intended as the organisation's final year in esports, championship season or not.

The exit floods the market with a championship roster in one of Valorant's most crowded free-agent windows. It also underlines Riot's priorities: the published criteria weighted fandom and community resonance over raw results. Winning Pacific's Stage 2 title, the selection shows, guarantees nothing.

Ten out: DRX dismantled

Days after its own non-selection, KIWOOM DRX (KRX) released three coaches and seven players across its main roster and DRX Academy. Head coach Pyeon "termi" Seon-ho and coach Kwon "Argency" Soon-woo — both with the organisation since its Vision Strikers days — departed alongside Kim "MaKo" Myeong-gwan, Kang "BeYN" Ha-bin, No "free1ng" Ha-jun and Song "HYUNMIN" Hyun-min. Academy coach Jung "OD" Jin-myung and players Park "Kyra" Jae-young, Lee "apeX" Chan-min and Shin "Krexx" Jae-yong went too.

The departures gut a legacy. From Vision Strikers' 102-match unbeaten streak to third place at Champions Paris, the organisation has been a pillar of Korean Valorant, producing icons such as Foxy9, Zest, Rb, stax and BuZz. MaKo, the rock of the most recent roster and its longest-tenured player, joined the core in July 2021 and reached 11 international events with the org. BeYN climbed from the academy to in-game leader; free1ng became one of the world's most feared Tejo players; HYUNMIN's high-octane Waylay in termi's "mosquito comp" powered the Paris run.

"Following our non-selection to the VCT partnership program, the players and management gathered to discuss our next steps ahead of VCT 2027," the organisation said. "All parties mutually agreed that parting ways is the most responsible path for everyone's immediate interests." KRX insists it is not leaving Valorant — it remains "fully committed to preparing for our next chapter of VALORANT esports" — but that chapter now starts from just Kim "Flicker" Tae-hee, Kim "yong" Ho-yong and coach Kim "glow" Min-soo. Academy teams are widely believed to be excluded from the 2027 structure entirely.

The Korean fallout continued elsewhere. Nongshim RedForce, winners of Masters Santiago, also missed the cut, though CEO Evans Oh vowed the organisation would stay in Valorant. And even a surviving partner is moving: T1's Kim "Meteor" Tae-o will leave when his contract expires, with mandatory military service looming as a consideration at 26.

The 32 partners and the tournament-first reset

The full 2027–2028 partner list: Americas — 100 Thieves, G2 Esports, KRÜ Esports, LEVIATÁN, LOUD, MIBR, NRG, Sentinels. EMEA — BBL Esports, Fnatic, FUT Esports, Karmine Corp, Gentle Mates, Team Heretics, Team Liquid, Team Vitality. Pacific — Crazy Raccoon, FULL SENSE, GAM Esports, Gen.G, Paper Rex, RRQ, T1, ZETA DIVISION. China — All Gamers, Bilibili Gaming, EDward Gaming, JD Gaming, Trace Esports, TYLOO, Weibo Gaming, Xi Lai Gaming.

What partnership actually buys has changed fundamentally. Partners keep a guaranteed annual base payment, a performance bonus, capsule and Championship-bundle revenue, and direct seeding into the season-opening VCT Kickoff. After Kickoff the safety net vanishes: partners must fight open-qualifier rosters for every spot at regional Cups, Masters and Champions — genuine relegation risk, for the first time. For outsiders, results are now the only currency, but a real one: open qualifiers feed every stage of the season.

The human cost extends beyond Pacific. Evil Geniuses is scaling back or shutting down competitive operations entirely after its exclusion, ending more than 25 years in esports; Cloud9 and NAVI are among the other prominent omissions. The selection has drawn fire too: M80 founder and CEO Marco Mereu highlighted the financial gap facing independent tier-one rosters, while Lyon Gaming's Emmanuel Neyra criticised the continued lack of representation for the Latin America North sub-region.

Organisations began confirming their status on October 18 ahead of Riot's formal announcement, and the renewable two-year cycle runs through 2028. Riot's message is blunt: stability for those who grow the game, but nothing after Kickoff is inherited. Pacific's 2027 will be defined less by who got picked than by how many of the rejected come back through the open door.
