Zaragoza fight Thunder over rookie Aday Mara's NBA rights
Basket Zaragoza claims Aday Mara is still under contract for 2026-27 and will block his international transfer — but the Thunder say the NBA has cleared the No. 12 pick to play.

TLDR
- Basket Zaragoza says Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Aday Mara remains under contract for the 2026-27 season and will formally oppose any international transfer request.
- The Spanish club says it has communicated its position to the Spanish federation, FIBA, the NBA and the Thunder, and is prepared to take "all necessary legal action."
- The Thunder responded that Mara "last played three years of NCAA college basketball and therefore, as advised by the NBA, no clearance from the Spanish team is required."
- The dispute revives a 2023 fight, when Zaragoza tried to block Mara's move to UCLA and the NCAA ruled in the player's favour.
- Mara, the No. 12 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, is expected to make his NBA debut when the Thunder open the season at San Antonio on October 20.
A contract that never ended?
Five days before the NBA season tips off, one of its most intriguing rookies may not be eligible to play. Basket Zaragoza, where 7-foot-3 centre Aday Mara spent his youth, released a statement on October 16 claiming the 21-year-old is still its player. "The player has a contract in force for the 2026-27 season with Basket Zaragoza," it said, adding it had not received an international transfer request from the Thunder but would oppose one if it arrived.
The club wished Mara "the best of luck in his new sporting endeavors" but added it had "an obligation to protect its rights, ensure compliance with existing contracts, and defend the interests of Basket Zaragoza, taking all necessary legal action."
Zaragoza's legal theory rests on a technicality: Mara left for UCLA in 2023, and FIBA does not require an international transfer for NCAA moves, so the club argues the contract was never terminated and has lain dormant through three years of college basketball.
The Thunder's answer: three years of college
Oklahoma City's response arrived within hours, and it was blunt. "Aday last played three years of NCAA college basketball and therefore, as advised by the NBA, no clearance from the Spanish team is required for him to play in the NBA," a team spokesperson said Friday.
That is the crux of the Thunder's position: the NBA itself cleared Mara, and the league office's word settles eligibility. The two sides fought this fight before — when Mara joined UCLA in 2023, Zaragoza challenged the move and the NCAA ruled in the player's favour. Mara then spent two seasons with the Bruins before helping Michigan win the 2026 national championship in April, the school's first since 1989.
Drafted 12th overall, Mara has been a preseason bright spot, averaging 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 blocks in five games. The Thunder open the season Tuesday in San Antonio, and the expectation is that he will play.
The money question
This is at least partly about money: the Thunder have no interest in paying a transfer fee, and Zaragoza reportedly wants one near $700,000. The timing is conspicuous — this was not an issue during Mara's college years, but when he signed an NBA contract, his old club's hand came out. Marc Stein noted the Thunder are "adamant that Aday Mara has the requisite clearance to play in the NBA" while Zaragoza "maintains he is still under contract."
An important distinction: Zaragoza threatening to oppose a transfer is not the same as Mara being ruled ineligible. Heraldo de Aragón reported other sources believe the disputed document may not even be necessary, and no NBA ruling has barred Mara from debuting.

What happens next
The calendar does the talking now. The Thunder open Tuesday, October 20, in San Antonio — and unless Zaragoza goes to court before then, this plays out as background noise to a debut. The club says it would dispute any transfer request, but none has been filed: a club ready to sue over paperwork nobody has submitted.
If Zaragoza files, the case would likely land before FIBA, where the 2023 NCAA ruling would hang over proceedings. But the Thunder, armed with the NBA's explicit clearance, are behaving like a team that has already won the argument.
For Mara — who debuted for Zaragoza's first team at 16 in 2021 and built a résumé of UCLA, a Michigan national title and a lottery pick — the timing is unfortunate. His preseason suggests he is ready for the league; the paperwork is the one question nobody can answer yet.
